Say "thanks" to a helpful CC member!

Sure thing GA2012!

And upon further investigation, I see that if you go back to one of your previous posts and try to boost your rep, it will show you how many reps you have? Really, folks, on CC there is PLENTY of competition in the form of our kids, colleges, fin aid packages, awards, and other kudos - don’t you prefer to just read, digest and decide for yourself if you can use the info???

I also see no record of rep “points” in my control panel…would that also list comments that people can make when they rep you??? (rolling eyes)

there Abasket, I gave you some rep points. Now, you will show up on your own control panel and know how valuable you truly are. :stuck_out_tongue:

I haven’t been in high school in decades and would really prefer to be a “scoundrel.” Just sayin’

abasket, I was just typing something very similar when your post #117 appeared.

Ages ago on the best thread ever (<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/501191-meta-thread-save-us-all-time.html?highlight=a+meta+thread”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/501191-meta-thread-save-us-all-time.html?highlight=a+meta+thread&lt;/a&gt;), I and a number of other posters raced each other for the grand prize of hitting Senior Member status first. That was obviously tongue-in-cheek (and may have contributed to the moderators’ decision not to count posts in the Cafe toward that status).

After deploying common sense and a humor filter (just in case), the best way for somebody new to figure out how much stock to put in anybody’s comments on CC is to work back through their posts to get a sense of who they are and what their perspective is - who really knows a lot about this school or that, who has an axe (or several) to grind, who offers outstanding perspective based on experience, who really loves to post and will spiff up an old story just to have something to contribute, who will make you laugh every time, who has great taste in books, who is both empathetic and knowledgeable, and so on. Wacky status levels and lots of green dots seem like occasionally amusing but mostly misleading splash banners on snack foods: “Now Bursting with More Flavor!” doesn’t offer any useful information. And I am definitely in the camp that feels this rating system doesn’t offer any useful information either.

I’ve certainly felt the urge to “like” a post, but in the end I think it works just as well to add a post of my own saying “great post” or “spewed coffee on the keyboard,” and I’ll stick to that. Is there an “ignore” button for the reputation scale/dots?

With regard to post #121 and others expressing concern: No disrespect to your position, but I feel confident I can continue to “read, digest and decide for [myself] if * can use the info” I receive here, regardless of what someone’s little green reputation is. If this new system arouses people’s competitive spirit … Oh, well. That would seem silly to me, but to each his own. There is very little harm that can come of this! Recall, this is an online message board.

^^^Great post Harriet:)! I agree best to do your own research and remember YMMV!

These are the levels I’ve seen so far, with the lowest one first:

Is on a distinguished road
Infamous around these parts
Will become famous soon enough
Has a spectacular aura about

Absweetmarie - I don’t disagree at all! If I see a poster I’m not familiar with and am not sure hot to interpret their post I simply go to their post history to see previous interactions. It’s pretty easy to see a pattern. My point was simply if the admins are going to roll out a system it seems foolish not to give all the information pertinent to it. Most of us will continue to gather our opinions the same way we always have.

I, for one, welcome our new reputation-based overlords.

My advice is not to take it too seriously.

D’oh! I have three dots now!

I feel so inadequate now! Wah! :stuck_out_tongue:

Surely the three dot level should be “X is an ellipsis…”

Roger_Dooley spoke of a “secret sauce” aspect to the process in his first post on this thread. Some people will undoubtedly be demanding the algorithm soon enough. Would it not be fitting, in a way, if the CC reputation system were not somewhat abstruse, just like elite college admissions? I’m pretty sure that as a white female I’m at a disadvantage, despite my obvious meritoriosity (not to mention my humiliosity).

Good job Hunt!! Please hurry to four dots so we can read the next overlord comment. The minions are curious.

No dots on mobile version. However will I know who to trust?

I just want to see the reward points statement. Can we use a high reputation for tuition discounts at Qualified Schools?

romani, trust nobody with less than 3 squares. Really, is this is what CC has come down to?

Vote for me! Let’s show CC that “anybody” can get squared.

But I can’t see the squares, GA! I’m lost!!

Can an individual choose to disable the feature?

I notice that “Lenitus has disabled reputation” here: <a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/community-forum-issues/1359650-reputation-feature.html”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/community-forum-issues/1359650-reputation-feature.html&lt;/a&gt;

romani, it says you are on a distinguished road, how are you lost? Guess you are 1000minusmillaharvards! You are obviously on the road to hell.

Lenitus said it just showed up that way for him, probably because he’s an administrator. I checked, and as a moderator I cannot disable the feature, so I’m sure users can’t, either.

GA2012MOM, I already used up my 10 available reps for today, I will hit you up as soon as I can!

(And, no, I did not tell anyone that I repped them, so they are under no obligation to rep me back!)
