How is SB Honors College...what r the benefits, if any? If someone from the program is out there, what do you find are the pros/cons about being in honors college? Thnks

You get financial aid, some small and exclusive Honors classes, no DEC requirement (except for DEC K), housing in a particular area of campus, and your degree gets a “With Honors” tacked on the end.

Downside is it’s tougher to get into, and if you don’t get in your freshman year it’s nigh impossible to apply and get in later.

My son is in HC. The work is hard and the classes that replace the DECs aren’t easy. What he likes the most, though, is how they truly are a close-knit community. Many of them are either pre-med or engineering, so they take a lot of the same classes together. I’m pretty sure everyone has received some type of scholarship. Mine got full-tuition. HC also gets priority registration, which is a big deal at SBU.

He works in a lab, but got the position the old fashion way…email inquiry & interview & prior experience. Not too long ago, one of the grad students he works with said he should’ve mentioned he was in HC when inquiring. They would’ve taken him right away without having him jump through hoops.

Everyone has some sort of scholarship, mine’s full tuition. Instead of those annoying million and a half DEC requirements, we have to take a set of 3-credit honors classes all of which are themed differently (although from my experience of 2 of them they seem to have weird themes that are determined when they can find professors to teach them haha… and to the above poster, both seemed pretty easy) and also 4 1-credit mini courses that are interesting due to all of the random choices we’re given. Oh yeah and 3 or 4 (I cant remember if its 3 or 4 since i’ll be done soon with them) complementary electives that basically serve the purpose of DECs … they have to be outside of your major field so since I’m engineering it has to be humanities, social science, language, art, etc.

Priority registration, i dont know about… seems kinda sketchy the way they do it since so many other kids come in with college credits. I had the same registration time, and even often after, non-honors kids.

Housing for first year HC students is Toscanini in Tabler. after that you can stay or go elsewhere

How are the research opportunities in the honors college? I just found out that I was accepted today, and since I want to go into physics, undergrad research is extremely important. Does being in the honors college make it easier to research with a professor?

In theory, but in practice just show professors that you give a damn, and do it as early as possible.

You know, BP? That’s really well put. I could never say it like that on the staff end, but that’s really dead-on.

Chris

Heh, thanks.
