lurkin'girl,

I'm pretty sure you can apply to CCS again after you enroll in UCSB, and you can always take CCS classes. Don't give your hope up, and have a nice trip next week.

and lurkingirl, can you tell us a bit about the campus?
i visited at an inconvenient time (back in dec when no campus tours were being held b/c it was a holiday and when it was raining...) so it'd be great to hear some details, your first impressions, etc. thanks!

Nope, going to UCI (if they accept me), or else it's Davis for me.

Decision: Accepted to UCSB and College of Creative Studies (Literature)

Stats:
SAT: 1400 (740V, 660M)
SAT IIs: 710 Writing, 670 Lit, 530 Math 1C
GPA: Heh. 3.19, UC scale.
Rank: At the high school from whence I transferred this year, 220ish/360. Upon receipt of this, I promptly enrolled in an independent study program that doesn't report class rank, mwahaha.
Other stats: My waist size is 29. My shoe size is 11.5. The GDP of Surinam is $1.5 Billion (US).

Subjective:
Essays: I'd give myself an A- for the UC essays and an A for the CCS letter of intent.
Hook (if any): I have more hooks than a fly fisherman. Let's see... three students from my school shot me with an airsoft gun because I'm gay, I've struggled with bipolar disorder for the past few years, I had a near-death experience a year and a half ago, a few of my fiction pieces were published in small east coast presses, heavily involved in equal-rights activism, etc, etc.

Location/Person:
State or Country: CA
School Type: Public high school; my current school is an independent study program in alliance with the community colleges, where I'm taking most of my classes this semester
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Boy
major strength/weakness: Sarah Lawrence commended my "courage and tenacity despite tremendous adversity"; Hampshire said "your bravery is inspirational and will take you to heights few people achieve." Additionally, I like to think that I'm eloquent. Weaknesses? See above.
why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: straight 5s on my AP exams and a solid SAT score to corroborate my claim that my GPA, for myriad reasons, doesn't reflect my potential. Also, independent study and college classes apparently look great on your application, even though I have about one one-hundredth of the amount of work I had while in real high school. Juniors: take note.
Major: Creative Studies; literature emphasis
Other Factors:

Mandragora: UCSB was generous for accepting you with that GPA. Usually there is a trend for the UC's to reject high scoring applicant's with low GPA's. But your acceptance is well deserved.

Nevertheless, Congrats! Are you considering UCSB? The CCS program is pretty amazing too.

Interestingly, not only was I accepted; they invited me to their reception for their "highest achieving applicants" as well. At the CCS program, I know Provost Ashby mentioned that some of their students who might otherwise have been denied admission to UCSB are accepted on the grounds of "extraordinary talent," and I wonder whether that had anything to do with it.

As for whether I will attend, ever since the envelopes started rolling in, I've been conflicted between Sarah Lawrence and the College of Creative Studies. But the tuition difference is startling, and for that reason and others, I'm 99% certain that CCS it is.

Haha. That's prolly the reason I got accepted. lol

a lot of ppl this year got rejected from ucsb but got into davis and irvine

make any sense?

It makes total sense. UCSB is a great school with a growing reputation. It has about the same academic reputation as Irvine and Davis, with a much more appealing location, in a true "college town."

I've been accepted to UCSB, UCD and UCSC and have decided that UCSB or Davis will be the one. I toured SB the other day and was highly impressed. What are the pros and cons of SB and Davis? I am a physics major. Not interested in UCSC.

Much as I hate saying it(being a Davis student) Santa Barbara is better known in physics, it has some of the top faculty in the US.

Out of all the UC's Berkeley is arguable the only one that has a better physics department than Santa Barbara.

doesn't UCSB have an awesome physics institute or something?

Yeah Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics http://www.itp.ucsb.edu/

Sweet fancy moses.

I realize I have no right to complain, but just when I thought I had made a prudent and wonderful decision to attend CCS, Berkeley goes and admits me. I'm excruciatingly conflicted.

perfectwall: If I were deciding between Davis and UCSB I would definatly choose UCSB (That is where I am going, but I didn't apply to Davis). I have stayed in the dorms at Davis for volleyball. I guess they are like any other college dorm, small, but they smell HORRIBLE due to all the smelly animals on campus. I don't know if that is enough to make you choose UCSB, but it really does smell horrible at Davis, in my opinion. Also, the food in the dining hall that I ate in was pretty bad, but it could be like that at UCSB too.
