SBU Admissions and CC members - I Need Some Help Pronto!

Hey Chris and fellow CC members at or applying to Stony!
What are my chances for Pre- Med at Stony?!?
Male
SAT: 1820 670- writing 600- Math 550- C.R.
GPA: 91.6%
AP's: Bio, Euro and Eng.
E.C.- Average and 200 hrs. of volunteering at a nursing home
in the Top 50% of my grad. class

Any help will be gr8ly appreciated...... Thanks in advance

I think you might have an good chance although your EC is kinda weak and can possibly bring the SAT score a little higher.

I dunno what i can do about clubs but i will try to raise that damn SAT score

I believe you're above average for both SAT score and gpa. You shouldn't worry at all.

agree with lil-killer but 1200 in math and cr will be safer.

Looks like you're right around our mean (or just below) for the fall 08 freshman class in most aspects, so I'd say you're in the ballpark. Figure you go up a few points on the SAT and you're competitive.

Chris

Thank You for all your replies! This is a critical time for me as i have made some mistakes through high school, but i have always maintained some degree of hope for Stony, if i dont get in i just dunno what i will do? It is extremly ideal for me - their rankings are great, price tag is great, Sciences are the best majors, but the only thing that stands in my way is the SAT, im just not a good test taker, i try so hard yet it still remains the same...

SBU is all about GPA, so I would say you are in.

Don't worry about extra curriculars unless you plan on honors college. With your coursework, you shoudl be in no prob.

I'd say that in threads like this, when the admissions guy posts, you'll want to listen to him the most.

Chris

I got in with a 1100/1600 or 1660/2400 SAT with no EC's. I believe OP has a good chance.

I know; I already said that. But I'd never say "no prob" to anyone.

But it's also too early to tell, as we won't know what next year's applicant pool will look like.

Chris

Alright everyone thank you for your replies, however SBU Admissions I recently attended the Stony Brook seminar and tour today, i dont know if you were there because I went around 11- 3, i must say that the campus is gorgeous and the students that showed us around were awesome. Props to Starbucks and the food court lol but i have a problem. I am more interested in majoring in biomedical engineering now, but the counselor who showed us a powerpoint on various majors in the SB Union building( dont recall his name, but was a tall white guy, sorry!) nd he said that the average SAT score to get into the program was around a 1200ish, however he also mentioned that the ACT score needed was a 24 or 25. Do i have a shot, if i can raise my math score to atleast a 600, nd reading to an 570ish because i know that this is what i have wanted for a very long time nd i dont ever want to look back nd say " it could have been.. had it not been for my SAT score" because honestly i have good grades in math, im up for a challenege but i just cant seem to do well on the SAT? nd also a very big question on ABET accredidation b/c just in case i dunt get into stony for biomed i plan on going to city college for bio med but their program is not accredited? thanks in advance Chris and fellow CCers u've been a gr8 help thus far just help a pal out for 1 last time

you can get into the university then apply to biomedical engineering which is what alot of my friends did. Also if i remember correctly City College is also ABET also.

It wasn't me, it was one of the other tall white guys in the office (if he had hair, it was Lyle; if not, it was Ryan). Yesterday was me; you were a day late!

kdragon is right -- we can admit you to the university, just not biomedical; then if you do what you have to do your first year (taking the same courses you'd have taken even if you were admitted into the program), then you can be admitted to the major your second year.

Don't know about City College. Not every program at every school is ABET accredited; I don't know their status.

Chris

LOL One day we shalt meet Chris, I must thank you for your help. Hopefully it'll be in Stony haha but what i was really wondering is whether ABET accredidation is important to get a job in biomedical engineering, so far every one i've managed to contact does not know, wondering if you could help me out, sorry i'am being a lil ***** about it this nd if i got to city college for a year can i transfer into stony even though their program is not ABET accredited in biomed eng., whill Stony look down upon that?

also kdragon what were your friends minimum GPA's after they were admitted into biomedical engineering?

Also im sorry ( slaps himself) this one is for a friend though, IS there a pre pharmacy major and if not how can he take pre pharm requisites at Stony b/c typically pre pharm is a 2 year course nd Stony is not a 2 year university sorry about the plethora of questions i have bombarded this board with once again (slaps himself) just SO curious .. thanks!!!!!!!!

wait so i should put down interested in biomedical engineering, will they give me a spot? or do i have to apply to another major like ummm say biology then switch majors?

im not really sure what his gpa is but i believe you need to maintain a 3.2 or higher in the math and science classes with no class grade less than a C.
You can just put that your biomedical engineering when you apply and you wont have to declare to a major till junior year.
I am not sure about pre pharm, but i know there is a premed. You need to be in a major with being in premed and usually people choose to be in biology major.
