Haha thanks so much, rainbowrose! I was incredibly nervous about the whole thing (and during the interview), especially since this year was the most competitive!
Good luck at NYSSEF! I was at LISEF (not competing, don’t ask haha) and I saw some really awesome projects, so that’s great you’ve moved on!

Oh, wexs, your credentials are really awesome, I’m sure you’ll get into a good lab.

Rejected, too lol! I wasn’t too sad since I had a feeling it wouldn’t work out since forgot to put in a letter or rec., but it still kind of sucks that I won’t get that stipend. I’m still gonna do research at SBU though at Garcia so I’ll have fun and still be productive lol. Congrats to everyone that got in!

For everyone that got rejected–actually lets not say that, lets say for those who weren’t recognized to be great ahah–are you gonna still work at SBU? Is anyone dorming?

Everyone should definitely dorm! It such a great experience. It makes the summer so much better. At first I was pretty mad I had to dorm since I wouldn’t see my friends, but everyone their gets really close and have tons of fun.

Heck, I’m a Siemens Semifinalist and a top 8 NYSSEF team… I’m not to upset XD. LISEF day 2 on Monday to look forward to :). I’m trying to ignore the politics in this whole mess and just do what I love. Hopefully my passion for research will get me good results.

Those of you who got placed without having a mentor beforehand, that is VERY VERY impressive!

EDIT: I said I’m not TOO upset. Scientists don’t have grammar problems lol.

rainbowrose–I’m sorry that you were rejected, but I don’t understand what you are referring to as “mentor politics”. I was accepted yet my mentor CERTAINLY is not known for being a science competition powerhouse–in fact, I think I’m among the first few high school students he’s mentored. I think essays are key for acceptance–I didn’t even submit PSATs or anything like that.

jogo84 thank you so much for telling me :D! It just seemed that way with all of the people who got in from my district, but I guess my app was just truly lacking. Oh well. I like that better than it not being my fault; at least I know I have something to improve on.

By the way guys… I thought my essay wasn’t great but I was more surprised that one of my research partners (who thought his/her app was really good and obvs has the same competition awards as me) didn’t get in, which led me to the theory since my other partner who thought his/her app wasn’t great and did things at the last minute DID get in. I guess he/she’s just one of those people good under pressure XD.

oh(not that this makes the accomplishment less amazing) but they do take people by category, and less people probably do math (which just makes it more amazing that you are doing it, but possibly slightly easier to get in)

thanks we worked SO HARD on our presentation. I hope to see you there next year jogo! i’ll be watching out for some super complex math project that I don’t understand whatsoever

"i’ll be watching out for some super complex math project that I don’t understand whatsoever "

Haha all of the chem/bio type people say that to the math/computer science type people. Well we don’t understand your fancy polymers/complicated chemical equations/biosensors/etc. either :)

It’s really insane how we’re all doing work that basically only we and HOPEFULLY (if we’re doing everything right) the judges understand as HSers. Like I don’t understand 90-95% of the other projects that aren’t in my category and even a lot of the ones that are in it.

It’s not impossible to get your work published in a research journal…it’s extremely hard (even undergrads and grad students have trouble accomplishing this) but definitely possible.

Then your work will be read, comprehended (and possibly bashed ) by experts in your field.

I wouldn’t bother trying to publish. Too much effort for basically nothing… I’m doing research now more for the experience than to be published. However, I PROMISE I’ll come back to this thread if I ever get something published
Also, I kinda like knowing things other people don’t lol

How does HSHSP (MSU) compare with Simons? Or is it to safe say leaving RSI which is ultra competetive, these two are very selective and comparable?

Simons is an amzaing experience! I was in it last year and I worked in neurobiology. I was actually accepted into Ojima’s lab, but Karen offered me a placement with a mentor that was more aligned with my previous research interests. It was tough to turn down Ojima’s lab, but I certainly do not regret it beause my research experience was amazing . Y9ou shouldn’t want to work in someone’s lab because they are known to produce award winning projects -it should be a choice based on your personal interests, because if you aren’t truly interested in the research done in your lab, it will be a looooong summer.

I personally did not dorm, but I kind of regret it because I didn’t get to know everyone in the program as well as I could have. But regardless everyone in the program is awesome, and you will have a great time. Let me know if yu have any questions - I would be happy to help!
