SC Commencement Today

SC is providing a live webcast of the 125th University of Southern California Commencement. It is available at 11:30 ET.
Go to the SC website and click on live webcast. The weather will be very warm today, which is unusual for May. The processional is impressive.
For those of you in the eastern states a colorful sight are the graduates from the Pacific Islands who are nearly covered with leis.

Thanks for the info GeorgiaGirl,.. am watching some now as it's just started.
Yes, it's very hot here today!

GeorgiaGirl, I was wondering...the students wearing the red gowns, which school are they in? The gowns look very impressive.

This is very cool. I just went to my brother's at Belmont. It was nothing like this!

thanks. I wonder how many are there from CC 2004? kinda lost track over the yrs.

Memories. I was there last year seeing son graduate. The fun graduations are for the specific schools.

Sequoia, i think the red gowns are the doctor degree (MD, DDS PHD)

ooh, they just released the doves

I hope I'll be there in 4 years

do the parents stand in the back?

do the candidates get their diplomas handed out to them in another ceremony with their own schools?

Thanks bmom
What a great ceremony! I love the sense pageantry and it's so colorful. What a wonderful memory.

bmom, I read that the diplomas along with individual honors will be handed out at the department ceremonies this afternoon. And then receptions follow that. A whole day of celebrations. Hope it's a cooler day for all of us in 2012. :)

btw, who received the honorary degrees?

Does anyone know from where George Lucas graduated? If not USC, he ought to get an honorary degree particularly after that tremendous gift, and for his work ofcourse.

George Lucas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ahh, I had to chuckle at the info that he was a "D+ slacker in high school"

Yup, PHDs wear the red gowns. Masters get hoods and undergrads get plain black, sometimes with a red sash around the neck.

It was extremely hot today. I just got off from working for eight hours, and I'm exhausted.

This is the general order of events: Massive commencement ceremony, where the president speaks and you get to move your tassel over. Then, satellite ceremonies, where you get to actually walk across a stage and get a diploma. Finally, receptions for each individual major. Lots of fun!

Also, the leis aren't specific to pacific islanders. In Southern California, leis are normal additions to graduation outfits. Almost everyone will have at least one, and many will have more. I know that even in high school I wore a lei, and I'm Hispanic! I think it makes everything far more colorful!

Madbean,
