SCAD vs. MCAD-Comic Art

I’m an art school hopeful looking to major in comic art/sequential art with a minor in animation. Right now I’m really torn between going to MCAD or SCAD. >_<

I follow a bunch of current MCAD students and alumni and I have to say their work is AMAZING. I’ve seen some of the work from SCAD graduates and most of it didn’t impress me as much as those for MCAD but that might just be because SCADs program is much larger. I’m worried about SCADs price tag, the dangers in the city, and all the rumors about it just being a rip-off but I’m also concerned that MCAD might not have as many connections as SCAD.

If any MCAD/SCAD students or alumni can give me any advice or clear up my misconceptions about the schools it would be really appreciated! :D

Your work will open doors first and foremost. You will largely succeed or fail on your own merits. Visit both locations and choose the school that is the best fit for you.

SAIC also has sequential art classes, but I wasn’t interested in those other than art history purposes so I didn’t really look at them. It might be another school that you like.

I have a few friends who went to SVA and now work for Marvel and Darkhorse. They said the program was restrictive though.

Your work will be most important. A good school won’t make up for a weak portfolio. What are you wanting to do with comics? Indie? Big company?

I almost applied to SCAD for photo/art history but decided against it. It struck me more like a trade school in some aspects and really resembled the Art Institutes in my opinion. It seemed very much profit driven. I also didn’t like the work I saw coming out, it was all digital and commercial- not my thing at all.
