SCAD vs. SVA?

Hi -- I'm looking to major in photography. I hope to primarily focus in fashion photography. which school would be better for this??

Parson’s would be the ideal choice for you. They are often considered one of the best schools in the US for a first degree in photography, especially if you have more commercial interests. I also believe their photography program allows you to specialize in fashion but you might want to confirm that info just to be safe. SVA might be a good second choice. Despite all the good things people say about scad, i think a lot of the work that comes out of there is a little substandard when compared to schools like risd, sva etc. They also don’t have the kinds of professional connections that parsons and sva have

hey, thanks for your reply. i actually visited parsons and for the price and what they offer, it just wasn’t going to work out. their photo program seemed relatively small and people said that unless you were in fashion, basically the other majors were pushed aside. what do you mean by professional connections? by not being in nyc?

If you are specifically interested in fashion photography, I don’t think SCAD is a good choice based upon my observations 3 to 4 years ago. I believe they offer only one course dedicated to fashion photography and it may be an elective. Best thing to do is to try and arrange a meeting or telephone conversation or exchange e-mails with the Department Chair. It may be different now. A New York City-based school is always going to offer the advantage of being so close to the fashion industry.
