SCAD vs. VCUarts vs. CIA

@curious235 thanks so much. We are attending an info session tomorrow’s for SCAD in philly so I will inquire

@gouf78 Ringinling is on our list

@stones3 VCUarts was on our list but they don’t offer the major my daughter wants

@NYCMomof3 if you are going to Philly you might want to check out University of the Arts and Temple University’s Tyler Art School. If anything grab some info from them. They both give excellent merit and artistic scholarship money.

You only need a 3.0 cumulative GPA to keep your scholarships at SCAD

My daughter attends there. It is 3.0

My daughter is a sophomore at SCAD and loves it. It is true that a portfolio is not required for admission but if you submit one you can get extra merit aid. If you don’t have the chops to succeed, you won’t make it at this school. The coursework is rigorous because it is a quarter system. Kids attend their classes twice a week for 2.5hr time blocks. There is no class on Friday so you can use it as a studio/work day. SCAD is a pretty amazing place, You need to visit this school to see all the amazing facilities. It is growing and they keep up with technology. There are plenty of scholarships available. Ask for more after the first offer!

@veehee we are going to attend an open house at University of the Arts in late March. As for Tyler, they don’t offer animation as a major which is what she wants. Thanks for the suggestions :-c

@63659699 thanks for the info. We will definitely make it down to savannah if she’s wants to apply. I hear good things about their animation program (that’s her interest)

@NYCMomof3 if animation is her thing, have you looked into MICA, Carnegie Mellon, or RIT? And Ringling in Sarasota has one of the best animation programs in the country. If she likes warm weather, it’s a great school.

@veehee we have MICA on our list and will hopefully get there soon to visit when she’s on her spring break. I was just looking into RIT. Trying to figure out how to get up there during her break. We also have Ringling on the list but not Carnegie Mellon. I have to look into that one. Thanks again.

Hey, @63659699 do you mind if I ask a quick question? I’ve heard mixed reviews about the professors from SCAD. Some people say that they are very devoted to their students’ success, but graduate students in particular don’t seem impressed by their teaching skills. Has your daughter had any major problems with the instruction she is getting? I’ve already been accepted to SCAD and I would really like to go there, but I’m trying to sift through all of the opinions people seem to have of it!

NYCMomof3- at VCUARTS animation major falls under Kinetic imaging major.
