I recently applied to SCAD for interactive design and game development. I have been wondering if it was a good class for game development and also there are some outdated reviews about the school. So if you can i would also like your opinion on the school in Savannah. I have skipped 11th grade and am now in 12th so i think i would have a good chance of getting accepted.
A friend’s daughter went there, was very pleased with the place, and has gone on to a successful career in design. But tuition, room, & meals is 50K+
I saw that the tuition was pretty expensive but its the closest game development university to me.
What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay?
You don’t have to do a “game development” major in order to develop games. Many are simply CS majors and some add in digital art.
I don’t think my parents will be able to help me out that much. They are probably just going pay for food. It’s just the best college i can find thats close to home. If you have any other suggestions for colleges please let me know. I was also thinking about digipen and carnegie mellon. Digipen requires precal (which i don’t have) and i don’t know if i’ll be able to get into carnegie mellon but im planning on applying there.
I’ll take a look at some CS majors.
D looked at SCAD and did a summer program there. Facilities, faculty, food, and the vibe of the Savannah campus is awesome. Though she ultimately chose an LAC with a good art program, we were all very impressed with SCAD. Her friend’s uncle went there and has had a very successful career.
BTW, it’s farther away, but did you look at RIT?
No have not looked at RIT yet. I’ll check it out.
Champlian College in Vermont has a game programming major. They are pretty generous with both Merit and Financial aide
@carmeronac also check out University of Central Florida (Orlando) which has an excellent emerging media program that (I think) includes game design. It’s significantly cheaper than SCAD especially if you are able to snag an academic scholarship. However, you would have to be there for more than 8 semesters because it takes extra time to finish the program. Also, the Center for Emerging Media is in downtown Orlando rather than the main campus and currently there is no shuttle. The kids in the program drive or catch a ride with classmates.
My D2 is trying to decide between SCAD and UCF for animation. SCAD is her first choice but she needs to see how to get it worked out financially. The top three in the south for animation-related programs would be SCAD, Ringling, and UCF. All are highly ranked.
Good luck!
