I'm currently using the 2009 SAT college board book to study. Now I am a little confused with the 'scaled score'. So for example, I score a 39 on the math portion. The score would be between 570-650. Why is that? Just depends on how well the other people do on that day? Please explain.

I’d like to know too, because on some tests it has one number (not a range)

The tests that have scaled scores mean they weren’t actually used in a previous test date by College Board. Thus, CB didn’t do any “equating” for those tests and the best they could put were score ranges. The tests that have exact scores are tests that were actually used in previous testing dates.

^
Ohhh. Okay. The book I’m using has 10 practice tests. The first few had a single score, as tb0mb93 said, but the last few have a range of scores. I would still prefer a single score though…

^You could average the low score of the range and the high score of the range for a single score. I don’t how accurate that would be though.
