I've just committed the naivest mistake possible. I filled out and submitted my forms on fafsa-application.com, complete with the $88 payment and everything. I thought that it was very weird that it wasn't a .gov website, and that it made me pay. (since I didn't think people do these types of "independent" services) I've revoked my payment now, but I am still very worried about my released info. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am planning on calling them during their business hours to tell them to wipe my information.

If it makes you feel any better, it’s not a pfishing website that is going to steal your information. While you didn’t need to pay to submit a Fafsa, this website charges for the submission. So the mistake you made, was paying to use their webstie vs doing it free through the .gov website.

If you cancel your credit card charges, they may file a judgement against you since you did use their service. Hopefully though, they will cancel the charges on your end, but understand that they don’t have to cancel them and when your credit card company calls them about the charge back, they have the right to tell the credit card company that you used their website to submit your Fafsa paperwork and that you do indeed owe them the money.

I checked on the website and the link where you start entering data is a secure page, so I don’t think you have to worry about identity theft or anything of that nature. The only downfall is you are out the $88.00. I’d chalk it up to a lesson learned.

Always remember what the first “F” in FAFSA stands for.

My D’s GC warns about that every year.
