Scams You've Encountered

Lots of calls recently from Peru and Switzerland. Of course different numbers everytime.

Yep, the one I’m getting is “hi it’s Evelyn, when are we going to go golfing again it’s been awhile?” I blocked and deleted it the first time a few weeks ago then yesterday got a similar “hey, when are we going golfing again?” - obviously a different number - so again, blocked and deleted. Sheesh! What’s the point? Edited to add I’m not “Evelyn”

I’m getting emails from a dead person, asking me to friend her on facebook. Also offering me sketchy “grants” and things “too good to pass up.” I asked our AG’s office and they said they don’t have personnel to handle all the scams, especially as I’m not a victim, so I delete & block. Endless!

That you’re behind with your golf game!?

My original AOL email was one that could easily be accidentally entered by others with similar addresses so I used to get a lot of misdirected emails. Eventually the spam got so bad that I started a new one and almost never use the old one.

I used to get an annual email from a golf club in Orlando reminding me to set up my tee time (never played golf in my life). After a few years, I finally told them I was not the player they were looking for. Now I’ve learned to evaluate the legitimacy of misdirected emails and try to notify them of the error if it seems important for sender and recipient. For example, health care systems confirming “my” appointment.

Two over the last two days.

When younger S was in HS, his PayPal account was hacked and someone charged $1000 in shoes in England to his debit card/checking account. Ever since I’ve put alerts on our checking accounts anytime it gets dinged, I get a text. I’m technically still primary on the account since they were in elementary school when we opened them.

This morning I got one on older S’ account. This is weird, because he rarely uses it. Nowadays we just use it to transfer money to each other, or if I cash a check for him that came to our house. It has very little money in it, but every now and then he does use it. I texted him and asked. Nope. Fraud. Somehow hacked his Shopify account. He hasn’t used it in years. So now we are in the process of reserving it and I’ll just close it out altogether. $60 wouldn’t be the end of the world, but still.

Then yesterday at Walmart. I love the app and always pay with the app at self checkout. I always scan it first because I don’t like fumbling with my phone after I’m done. I just want to go. So I scan it as usual and then the screen says it’s processing. And a $70 charge (for Pokémon cards!) pops up on my card. Uh I don’t think so. They said someone must have left without paying, but the screen was on the Home Screen, so I dunno. I did get my $$$ back, but it took customer service about 30 min for the system to override it. And I had to get cash back vs reserving the charges. Even though I don’t like to, I’ll definitely scan at the end now.

That is interesting! And our store switched to the cordless scanners 1-2 weeks ago. I joked with H “I wonder how long until they go missing.” I hadn’t thought about scammers. I wonder if that happened in our case. It happened within a few secs of me walking up, that I didn’t think to look to see if it was there. H wound up scanning our groceries while I dealt with the mess, but I don’t think we had anything to be scanned that day. (which is rare!) I’ll keep an eye out now for sure.

Stores here have built in scanners where you wave the barcode over the base or back of the checkout thing and it registers. No wand.

We have that too. The scanner is for the giant stuff (40 bottles of water) that you don’t want to lift up and drag over the scanner. You can scan it right in your cart.

Now I gotta go look next time I am at the store! I rarely use the self check out.

I LOVE self check-out. I’m very fast at it. I put like items together in bags. And there’s rarely a line. The regular lines are sooooo long and take forever. We even have a couple that have conveyor belts which is nice when you have the $200 basket of stuff. But even then, I can do it easily enough at a regular one.

I’m to the point where even if the regular lines are short, I’ll still choose self-checkout. And I also love the Walmart app, though now I have to be careful to scan it at the end of the process.

Last few days, at least twice a day, I get an email from “Harbor Freight”, a store I have been in twice in my entire life, informing me that I have won a piece of equipment (power washer, etc) as a member of their Rewards Club ( I am not a member).

Of course, hover over the links and the addresses have no resemblance to Harbor Freight’s address.

I’ve been getting that email too - several daily. Never been, never touched their website. Pure annoyance!

Just got this text: “Lili, I like the dress you gave me very much, thank you for the gift.”

Worse, I have to explain receiving that text to my wife!

Remember the friend upstream who didn’t believe me about the COVID test Medicare scam? Well…this week, they told me I was right. They got a last shipment of more tests and finally the husband called Medicare. He found out directly from them about that scam.

However, they are no longer sending COVID tests upon request…that ended May 11 apparently. So…they were told that this scam should be over.

I say….just wait until the next op!

I’ve never been to the store or even heard of it and I get these daily. Unfortunately, they use a different random “from” email address each time, so blocking the address or reporting it as spam doesn’t help
