D got a letter from the IRS saying that her stimulus check was being deposited in her checking account. If she did not receive the $ within 7 days, contact the IRS at …
My first thought was that it was a scam. Send people letters that look like an IRS letter directing them to a scam page. Turns out it was real, as proven by a visit to irs.gov.
My dead family member got a letter last May that the check had been mailed a few weeks before, but we never got it. Mail theft? I have fingers crossed that no one stole it and the IRS does not ask for it back!
Apparently a lot of people are very worried my car is about to break down and I don’t have adequate insurance. I just wish they understood what the word, “final” means when they tell me it’s my final notice.
I’ve missed calls from Doctor’s offices calling to confirm my appointments because I was afraid it’s spam. Now I answer if I have an appointment coming up and I have since told them they can leave messages on my cell because I’m the only one who uses that phone
Scam or not?
Yesterday I got a phone call from AT&T, saying I’ve been a good customer for years, so have a chance to lower my bill in half. eBay would be paying the difference. I asked and wrote down all the details. I said I’m at work, could I get back to them. He gave me his extension number, and a place to call for authentication. What was the catch?
Well, I’d have to pay $139x 3 upfront, I order to save this $ for 3 years. So, I called AT&T. It took 20 minutes to get to the department that handles promotions. This man, with a heavy accent, informed me he had never heard of this promotion and AT&T would never ask for $ upfront. Another 15 minutes for him to check with others.
Today’s scam: I received a voice mail (computer voice), telling me that I will be charged $149.99 from my checking account or plastic card they have on file, for a subscription service I requested. To opt out, I need to call: 208.722.0225 (if anyone is interested )

I too have received numerous “this is your last notice” calls for an extended warranty. My parent (deceased for over 5 years) still gets them in the mail!
DH and I bought our current house eight years ago. The previous owner died about a year before that. I get notices for her from a local bank regarding a CD. I’ve called the bank to tell them she’s deceased, scrawled “Return to Sender” and “Deceased” across the envelope and put it back in the mailbox, and I even wrote a letter to one of her [adult] kids who lives nearby – she never got in touch with me. And I still get the bank notices.
Off-topic, I guess – not a scam – but really annoying!!
New one today, two calls already, from the local prefix. U.S. Customs and Border Control has a package of illegal drugs and cash that was sent to me. I am instructed to immediately press 1 to speak to the officers.
I’m getting a lot of Spam emails in broken English. They have ‘evidence’ and ‘video’ of me on porn sites and I need to pay X for them to delete them. Just stupid. Who falls for that?
I got a scam call today and picked it up just for fun and giggles. The recorded message told me that my Social Security number had been compromised and to press 1 to speak to someone about it. I did – had to wait a fairly long time before someone picked up; maybe 10 seconds or so – and the fellow asked me for my name. I told him he first needed to provide me with my SSN, since he had called me. He hung up on me.
My Social Security account gets “suspended” almost on a weekly basis. It’s always on voice mail because those particular calls come on my land line while I am at work. I also get very regular calls about the extended warranty on my car; one woman specified the car and I told her I hadn’t had that car in 10 years. She said “oh, what did you trade it for”? I asked why she needed to know, and she hung up on me. I get a lot of calls about my Windows needing to be updated; I use Apple products.
A guy who had just come to work for me a few years ago clicked on the link that “UPS” provided. That one was so bad we just had to wipe his computer and start over; luckily we hadn’t hooked that computer into the company network yet.
On this gorgeous day I was out enjoying a walk when my phone rang:
Me: Hello
Guy on other end (G): Hello, is the head of the household there?
Me: It depends, what do you need them for?
G: Is the MAN of the household there?
Me: Well, that’s a great way to win friends and influence people…
G: Is the lady of the household there?
Me: It depends, what do you need them for?
G: I’m calling from the X society of police. We’re having trouble getting all of our funding this year… (I hung up)
Even if it had been legit (very doubtful) the dude totally lost me with his response to my first question. I’m not donating anything to someone who needs the man of the household. We never donate via phone anyway, but some things are still irritating in 2021.
