Scared About My Future. Will I go to A good College?

Im a Junior in High school. and I have just finished the first Quarter of my Junior year with a 3.123 or possibly a 3.2 once one of my teachers changes my grade. I was wondering if it was possible to make a 3.5+ Cumulative before my Senior year.

Current Cumulative: 3.145

I have Taken honors classes since 9th grade, and AP GOV Sophomore yr.

I currently take AP BIO, and AP Language, along with Pre Calculus.

Will I have a shot at UMDCP or Penn State UP? Im really scared that I won't be able to get
atleast a 3.5+. Please help, dont want to be a failure

There’s a difference between failing to achieve a certain goal and being a “failure.” Get rid of that idea and do your best from now on. You should be able to figure out your best case GPA if you’re taking Pre Calc. Ask your guidance counselor for help if you need it.

There are a lot of factors specific to your school that affect the answer (e.g., weighting of honors or AP classes; whether your school uses pluses and minuses, whether they compute your cumulative GPA based on quarter grades; semester grades, or end-of-year grades; whether you can add on more academic classes, either in school or online or at a community college, to balance the earlier grades). Nevertheless, this is still basically a math question I’d give to my eighth graders.

Let’s say that your school bases your cumulative GPA on semester grades. (No reason for this assumption, except that’s how my high school did it back in the day. My kids’ high school actually uses only final course grades.)

You got through 4 semesters with a cumulative GPA of 3.145. You have, at most, two semesters to achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. Can it be done?

[4(3.145) + 2x]/6 > 3.5
4(3.145) + 2x > 21
12.58 + 2x > 21
2x > 8.42
x > 4.21

In your school and with your schedule, is it possible for you to average 4.21 for both semesters this year? I dunno. It depends on how your school weights grades, and also, of course, on how well you do. But it illustrates the fact that since you have half as much time to raise your GPA as you have had to create the GPA that you currently have, you need grades that are a lot higher than your target GPA this year in order to reach that target.

The best advice for you, notakid has already given. There are thousands of colleges and universities in this country. You need to find several institutions where you think you can be admitted, and you think you can be successful and happy while you’re there, and your family thinks you can afford them. Those are the colleges and universities that are good for you. Even if they don’t have big-time college sports.

try UMD Baltimore County, they’re are a pretty good school and listed as one of the best upcoming schools and you should definitely be able to get in.

Nevertheless, you should be able to get in to Penn State UP if you’re not applying into an Engineering school.
