I hate math. I take notes in class but I rarely absorb any of the material, and later when I look at my notes, it might as well be in another language. I always space out whenever the teacher explains anything. I usually do better when a student, or someone other than my teacher, explains things to me, but they aren't always available or willing to do so.

I'm currently in Algebra II Honors. I got a B the first semester, but that's only because my teacher is extremely lenient and gives me credit just for showing some bs work on homework and tests. I honestly haven't learned that much in this class.

Next up the ladder is Pre Calculus. I'm definitely not taking honors, but I'm still fearing it because Algebra II is already getting to me. Has anyone else sucked at Algebra II but done fine in Pre Calculus? How do the classes compare? Is regular significantly easier than honors?

Precalculus is basically advanced algebra (it’s even called that in some school districts). If you’re not paying attention in Algebra II, you will have a very hard time in precalc. It basically uses Alg II as a foundation for exploring more complex math. If I were you, I’d start studying on a regular basis. Check out khanacademy.org; there are some great Algebra II videos there that can help you.

Well, for me Algebra II was a breeze, but I really had to work hard for an A- in Pre-Calc…I guess it just depends on the person. There’s a ton of trig in Pre-Calc which was the most difficult part for me.

For me, pre calc was an extension of algebra. I literally got destroyed in pre calc even though i got an a in algebra 2. If you think you can do it, do it. If you can’t… then don’t do it.

You could get the textbook for Pre Calc from The Art of Problem Solving website and work through it this summer. The textbook is well written for someone self studying. You may not be as bad at math as you think - one of my kids is a math whizz now, but he was so bad at algebra I and geometry that we had him go back two years and repeat both of those classes. He just had really bad instruction I think. He’s a sophomore in college majoring in math and getting straight A’s. If you’re getting it better when students explain it to you, line one of them up now to tutor you regularly. Good luck!

@609Represent I don’t really have a choice… whether I can do it or not, I have to take it. I’m only a Sophomore, so I need at least one more year of math.

@PinotNoir I was actually in a similar situation, though unfortunately I didn’t turn out successful. I actually started out ahead of the game in math; I took Algebra 1 in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade, but I got a C in Geometry so I retook it in 9th and got an A. But now here I am in Algebra II, completely lost again. Sometimes I feel like skipping Pre Algebra and going straight to Algebra I is what screwed me over this whole time because I never really understood Algebra I… but I can’t go back now.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I’m going to look into getting a tutor. I really don’t wanna fail Pre Calc haha, and right now it looks like I would.
