do you guys think a high sat score can make up for a mediocre gpa say 3.6/3.7?

2100+...but depends what schools youre aiming for

Sure, the vast majority of non top 40 colleges happily take a 3.6 plus high SAT.

If you're looking at a very selective college, a high SAT score won't make up the difference. They want a high GPA too, probably close to 4.0 ... I was in the same situation.

panic, what school are you attending now... by the way i'm hoping for ucla, ucsd, uop, and usc

at the most selective schools, no. They have plenty of kids with good SAT's and good grades. However there is no need to panic. There are over 2,500 4-year colleges in this country, and outside of maybe 100 the rest accept the majority of their applicants. If you have to follow the herd and enroll in one of those 100 you have a problem. Otherwise, there are plenty of great colleges out there that will welcome you. And once you get past just looking at the name but start looking at the overall fit (eg. does the college supply what you want/need, in a setting you desire, enrolling the type of kids you want to spend 4 years with) you will find plenty of good matches. I suggest you get a good book on college admissions, such as Admission Matters and read it now to learn about the road ahead.
