Scattered ECs = ?

What constitutes the difference between someone who has scattered ECs and someone with a broad range of interests?
Everyone on CC keeps saying that ECs are too scattered, etc, but I also know that you have to seem interested in many things.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Lets say a person is very interested in the law and does mock trial, internships and all this law stuff. Would it look scattered if they did some environmental things, and proved they were very passionate about the environment? What if they also did some medical stuff?

Sorry if this is the wrong category…I didnt rly know where to put it.

I actually thing a bigger problem arises when a student says they plan to major in XYZ (perhaps because they hope this is a lightly declared major and thus will boost their chances) but there are zero ECs related to that major. Think pre-vet but no sign of active volunteerism with animals, of which there are loads of opportunities in most areas.

Scattering is less important that what you did the the EC. There are plenty of math/science people who love to play musical instruments, for example.

Oh yeah that makes a lot of sense.
And I do know that interviewers often ask about such things.

Just do what you want… My EC’s ranged from Quiz Bowl, to Tennis, to service organizations, to Marching band, etc… and my so called “intended” major was psychology.
