SCEA Applicants

I've been working on the common app essay for the past month. I finished the 5th rewrite last night. I'm glad to say that it's almost done. I just need to re-edit the last paragraph, and it's done. It's progressed so much. I'm sooooo proud of myself! I'm finishing the activity essay this weekend. Davidrune, I'd like to read your activity essay (if I'm trustworthy!)

what are you guys all writing your common app essays on?? the "write your own prompt" thing sounds appealing but i'm not so sure if i wanna do that.

I did the topic of your choice essay for the Common App. I didn't really want to do any of the other ones so I made my own!

I did a mix of choice 1 and my own topic. Its about how I dealt with a troubled kid opening up to me about his problems.

btw, is anyone else sending in research abstracts or any other supplementary stuff??? if so what are you guys sending??

my activities essay is about marching band ! yeah band!! and the other is the prompt about "diversity" and im writing about my experience at GYLC and how it changed my views and made me fall in love with the idea of diversity in a new sense.
the 500 word essays were easy. one hour sitting for each of them. its this 150 word crap that i cant seem to write well.
its also about marching band. yeah band!
and thats where im off to now, 3.5 hours of practice yea!

Iplayoboe, it's nice to see some marching band pride. I wish I could get my band mates to be a little less embarassed and a little more enthusiastic.

My activities essay is probably going to be about Amnesty International (although I have yet to write it...I'm finding the 150-word limit to be very frustrating), and my supplementary is about my experience of going to a synagogue while volunteering in Brazil (it IS about an interest or activity...)

I STILL haven't started my Common App essay...grrrrr! Tomorrow....DEFINITELY tomorrow...or maybe the next day...DEFINITELY the next day...

I also did topic of your choice

My chosen essay topic is an experience that has changed me, and why. My supplementary topic is an activity that has meant a lot to me. Don't these two essays sound about the same? thats ok right?

Actually Nealious, my two essays were very similar. I wrote my activity essay about volunteering at a summer camp the past four years and my personal statement was about how one of my campers (I was a counselor at the camp this last year) opened up to me about his troubled life.

my two essays will be similar as well. I was starting to think that would be a problem.. not really, right?

No, I don't think it would be a problem. It would show consistency in your interests.

I don't think it is a problem at all. I think it helps present a unified theme, something that you want the adcom to take away when they are finished reading your app.

great! I'm getting so nervous guys. my first quarter report car disnt so pretty. blah. I know it doesnt count though. it's not BAD. I just hate it. :( how are your grades keeping up?

Hey, I bombed a math test. I have to ace the next one to maintain my 7.

Every other thing is pretty much constant.

Except, I"m gonig up in French.

oh yea... I'll send my activity essay to u guys, when I'm completely done editing it.

I wrote one essay on my volunteer work, which i really enjoy. Another on just myself...don't know quite how to describe it...an apetitite to learn (i know that sounds corny).

To the person who asked about research abstracts, I asked an adcom the same thing. He basically told me that the abstract itself is not very useful to them, the fact that you did research (which would be highlighted on another part of the app) is. He implied that the actual abstract, unless extraordinary, would not be of much benefit

Hey newt you mentioned you were from wheaton. I live in Clarendon Hills and go to Benet, what school do you go to?? I have met the rep from our area and he is an awesome guy. After going to Yale he took a bunch of companies public and made millions. He is apparently doing the rep thing for enjoyment, which really shows because he has the best college presentation of any representative I've seen. He made me want to go to Yale even more than before, and I didn't think that was possible.

Hm any of you attached a resume? I didn't.. but I submitted my app already.. I figured if they wanted a resume they would have asked for one.. so I just did what was in common app.
