SCEA - Class of 2011

Another question: If I got the same award/honor twice in different school years, should I list it once for each year or indicate both years together?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question... :P

ROCKao for your latter question, you should include it if you have spaces available. if you don't, only put it once if its prestigious.

Do AIME scores fit in the 'academic honors and awards' or the 'extracurricular and personal activites'? What about composition awards and merit scholarships? What are 'academic honors' exactly?

Well, I'm not exactly sure what the AIME is. But Academic Awards would be awards recieved based on academia. Like your grades or awards by academic faculty members.

I was looking over the app (last year's app actually, it's the only one I have on paper) and where would you put non-academic awards? There are sections for academic awards and for extracurriculars..

AIME is that math competition right?
what did you get?
cause if you didn't get an award for your score I"m not sure it counts.
I think I got something like 116

and how do you quote on this forum???

[ quote] and [ /quote] minus the spaces.

I don't want to apply.. I haven't started the app, cuz when I finally do I'll find out how unprepared I really am. And it seems like nobody here has finished the application yet?

julyinoh - I understand how you feel. Next week is really crunch week for myself but you really can't stress yourself over college. You should be serious, not stressed. It never hurts to try. Besides, it's not due till Nov. 1st. What do you mean by unprepared?

[for those of you curious about AIME, AMC12 you can check out this
year's results US and International here ]

Interestingly only Caltech and MIT actually have a separate entry to enter
consecutive year scores on the AIME/AMC12 on their applications, Stanford
does not. you should list consecutive years on the same line with year you
took the exam by the side- especially if you got a high score.

If you did well enough to qualify for AIME (AMC12 score of 100 or better)
that in itself is considered a sign of academic excellence. Since you are
in Taiwan though and a lot more Taiwanese students seem to get
perfect scores in AMC12 I am not sure how just taking the AIME will be
viewed. If you got a score of 7  or greater on the AIME it is a major
achievement regardless of country or state!

Question:
for those of you that have submitted form 1, does the teacher evaluation forms provided after form 1 look anything different from the one downloaded in the packet from this address
http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/pdf/Freshman07_Forms_1-7.pdf
I cannot submit my form 1 'cause I need to apply for a ssn, but I like to have my teahcers write recs NOW.
thanks

I'm sure they are all the same. It would be an unfair advantage to students using the internet. Isn't it required that you mail in your teachers recs? Regardless, it's all the same.

yeah its the same. wow, you guys are already doing your apps? lol i prefer to do the essays first then the apps since apps are easier

exactly, apps are easier, why not do the easy part first?
plus, you'll need to get your teachers's recs soon or later, it's better to give them time.
I have a hard time staying on track. so I must do whatever I can first.

this is a stupid question to ask, but
how do you list AIME score? do you just write down AIME12: 106.5
or the index score or the AIME score
unfortunately I got only 1 on AIME, so the index score is 116.5
I spent two hours there doing nothing

Agreed! I like getting stuff out of the way. That way I can devote my whole attention to the hard things.

on the contrary for me, i love to do the hard things first and then be able to relax in the end. plus, school hasn't started yet, so i can devote more time to just doing the essays. then when school comes, ill concentrate on the teacher recommendations.

I don't know about all of you, I contemplated for weeks about which teacher i would ask.

Thanks to those who answered my question concerning AIME!

Arwen, I got 6...is that still worth putting on my application? And I was a little confused as to where you suggested I put my score...does it belong in academic or extracurricular? I know MIT and caltech have a seperate column for that, but would colleges that didn't ask still want to know my score?

Thanks again for answering! :-)

Actually, teacher recs were probably the least worrisome thing I had to think about. I decided what teachers I wanted by January of last year since I had a variety of my teachers write me recs for these summer programs. All I have to do now is approach them again and just remind them about writing ones for college.

just making it to the AIME (the 106.5) is cool you should list this!
It is a national level academic honor which a fraction of the test
takers achieve! :)

imho listing the index score is probably not going to be advantageous
unless the score was just short of the USAMO cutoff?
