I applied SCEA to Stanford. SCEA, in case you don't know, means that you can only apply to one school in any type of early application process. However, on their website, Stanford outlines a few exceptions to this rule (public universities, early admission for scholarship consideration, etc.), one of which is any university, public or private, on a rolling admissions policy.

I was offerred the chance to use a "Leaders Application" for Willamette University. It's a shortened application w/ a few other benefits, including a response within three weeks, similar to a rolling admissions policy. However, normally, Willamette uses the Common App on a normal admissions schedule with a Feb. 1 deadline.

My question is, would this Leaders App qualify as a rolling admissions program, meaning I could apply now without violating the SCEA policy? I emailed Stanford a week or so ago, asking this question, and I received an automatic response saying that they might not respond since they are so busy (still haven't gotten a reply). Should I apply now? Or just wait until I get my decision from Stanford (2 weeks), and if I get denied, I could apply anyway? Or apply to Willamette normally with the Common App?

I believe you can apply now. You just need to make sure that you mark clearly “regular decision” on your app for the other college. It’s already passed the early decision deadline which was Nov 1st.

It’s not an early decision/regular decision program-- I know I could wait until the February 1st deadline using the Common App. This application is different than the Common App, because I would find out within three weeks (so right now, around Christmas time). I talked to my counselor, who said that it sounded similar to an early program, so he didn’t know how Stanford would feel. He told me to email them semi-anonymously (which I did), but I got no response.

Willamette’s normal programs are two early action periods (one having a 11/1 deadline and the other 12/1) and regular admission when decisions are made after Feb 1. The issue with your Leader’s program is that it looks like a third early action program at a school that generally does not follow rolling admissions. Unless Stanford clarifies, I would not risk the possibility of being dinged by Stanford for having violated its SCEA rule.

Ok, thanks a lot. I might also just wait, and if I’m rejected from Stanford it won’t matter if I apply anyway-- and if I’m accepted, I will have an acceptance letter to relieve my anxieties.

“Under the rules of SCEA, candidates cannot apply elsewhere while awaiting the Stanford decision except:
Any institution, public or private, under a non-binding Rolling Admission option;
Public institutions under a non-binding Early Action program;
Foreign colleges/universities on any application schedule;
Institutions whose early application deadlines are a requirement for consideration for special academic programs or scholarships only if the notification of admission occurs after January 1;
Institutions under an Interim Decision program only if the notification of admission occurs after January 1.”

Hi hockey,
We’re in the same boat. My D applied SCEA to Yale and also got the Willamette leader’s application. After much debate, she sent the leader’s app about 10 days ago. It required a rec and profile from her GC and she was worried if she delayed too long, this would turn into a nightmare right before break. Her intent is to withdraw her W application if she is admitted to Yale Dec. 15th. W is non-binding. There is no harm here. Willamette is a great choice, by the way, IMO.
