<p>Background Information</p>

<p>o Born in Haiti. Lived in Haiti until the age of 12. Moved to<br>
the United States 5 years ago after an assassination
attempt on my parents. Trilingual: Creole, French, and
English (in order learned). Creole is spoken at home.</p>

<p>o Black. Low Income family- Total Family earnings for
2004 were $22,000. </p>

<p>Courses: 12 Honors, 8 APs by graduation</p>

<p>Recommendations: I read both and they’re pretty great. </p>

<p>Essays: The first one is about my experience moving here from Haiti, and how I was bullied and made fun of at school. I also mentioned living in a garage for about a year with my family because that was all we could afford.
The second one is about growing up in a third world country, the experiences I encountered there, and how I would not change that aspect of life.</p>

<p>Extracurricular Activities</p>

<p>o French Honor Society: (10-12). President for senior year. We do many activities in the community such as providing French tutoring, reading children's books in french to kids at the local library and a local elementary school. I am currently working on making bokklets on hiaitian short stories for children at the local middle school to get children into french and spread haitian culture.
o French Club: I(9-12). Vice-President for senior year. As Vice-President of the club, I’m in charge of community service. We partake in many activities throughout the year. We make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless at Camillus House. We participate in the Walk of Hope for Breast Cancer every year. We participate in book drives. We have participated in all the recent hurricane relief drives and we are currently organizing a toy drive for children here in South Florida whose homes were flooded during Hurricane Katrina.
o5000 Role Models of Excellence Project: (9-12). Member of the committee since my sophomore year. We participate in many activities throughout the year, including community service. We help out every year during Career Day, Open House, and the Town Hall Meetings held in school. We make yearly courthouse and prison visits where we talk and eat with prisoners in order to find out more about them, and how they ended up in a correctional facility. We also paint the student parking lot every year and we participate in a yearly health summit. This year, selected members of the club will also participate in “The Village Improv Troup,” a group that uses improvisational theater to send constructive messages to teenagers about alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy, and violence.
o Krop Reads: I have been a member of the club since sophomore year. I was a member of the club’s Activities Committee in 10th Grade, which planned trips, parties, and other club activities. I was elected Historian for junior year, and I was in charge of taking pictures during all of the club activities. I was elected Vice-President for senior year. The main purpose of the club is to read to and with first grade students in the after school program at Madie Ives Elementary. We work with first graders because they have just started to learn how to read, and often have difficulties reading. We walk to Madie Ives together usually every Monday to read to the children. We help them improve their reading skills by doing many activities with them: reading out loud, finding words they don’t know, and saying out loud words they have difficulty pronouncing. This year we plan on providing tutoring after school for students who are having difficulty passing the reading part of the state test required for graduation, and we will also provide tutoring for the Verbal and Writing part of the SAT. We also organize a book drive every year. Last year, we collected thousands of books from students in the school, and spent countless hours wrapping the books to distribute to homeless shelters as Christmas presents for indigent children. As Vice-President, I will be in charge of the book drive this year. We also organize a literacy rally every year in an effort to promote literacy among teenagers.<br>
o Church Youth Group and Choir: I have been a member since freshman year. I am one of the three people who usually conduct the Friday night services. After the Friday night services, we usually rehearse the songs that we sing in the Sunday night services. Aside from church activities, we do many other activities in the community. We participate in a food distribution program with the government, through which we distribute food to needy members of the church and the community. Every year, we also hold a back-to-school service. At this service, we invite many other churches in the community, and we distribute school supplies to students. I also make a speech or do a reading at every back-to-school service. I also teach Sunday school for children every Sunday morning.</p>

<p>Work Experience
oMy mother just opened up a restaurant. I do publicity for the restaurant. I buy the groceries and other materials for the store, and I help her cook during the weekends. </p>

<p>I wasn’t able to take AP Calc cause I barely spoke English in middle school and I couldn’t take the advanced math track. Also, my grades dropped during the second semester of senior year resulting in a C for AP Bio and a B for AP American cause I was having a lot of family problems. A family member was kidnapped in Haiti, and my parents had to work extra hours to help come up with the $10, 000 ransom, so I basically had to take care of the house and my brother and sister.</p>
