Sceduling Classes

What advice do the current college students have for us pre-freshman about scheduling classes?

What are your opinions on scheduling classes back-to-back versus in a big chunk. Is scheduling a gap between classes beneficial, or does it just lead to wasting time and having less time in the afternoon? On the other hand, would it be hard to attend several classes in a row without any preparation time before or after?

Thanks

I like having my classes back-to-back just in mornings. It is a personal decision though. It annoys me to have an hour here and there that isn't enough to do much. But do schedule yourself time for lunch, and not more than three one-hour classes in a row. Free time in the afternoon is wonderful to get a start on homework, have club meetings, a job, or get errands done when places are still open. I don't find I need prep time before a class, as I do things the night before. But, just be happy if you can get the classes you need to take at you school. If you go to a small one, the course offerings are small, and at a larger school classes fill up very fast. Good luck!

Next semester I got slightly screwed over and go from 9am-1pm straight, and then a 3pm class on MWF but I only have 2 classes on Tues. and 1 class on thurs so that should be awesome :-\

so like kw said, make room for lunch or breakfast!

IMO, late classes (anything that starts after 4) really stink because you're almost always guaranteed to have something else to do during that time period!

Lol, this year I scheduled all my classes around TKD training. Both semesters.

This semester i have an 8 am tuesday and thursday, an 11 am tuesday and thursday, and a 6:30 pm monday and wednesday. I work mon-wed, fri from like 2-5 in the afternoons.

Alright here is some tips. It depends on who you are but here are some questions to help you decide that.

When you take breaks are you more apt to want to do something or relax?
If you take breaks and nap or do other unproductive things then you better not have too many spaces b/c that will eat up valuable time. I had no other choice freshman year and wasted half a day doing nothing in between an hour or two of breaks.

Are you early to rise? Did you like taking the SAT early or at a later time?
This is for learning style and is pretty obvious. The SAT is for quiz sections. I like doing quizzes later b/c I take tests better mid-afternoon, not right after I wake up.

When do you like to eat? What meals don't you want to miss?
For most it is lunch and dinner.

Can your brain take a lot of info at once or do you like time to think things over?
Do you want to schedule a lot of lectures one after another especially if they aren't related? Probably not. My brain can only take so much. Then I need at least a half-hour break.

When do you do your best work? Early or late?
If you do your best work during the daytime, try to end your classes early or have a lot of breaks. If it is late than start later and have your classes end a little later.

Can you keep a lot of info in your brain for multiple tests in one day?
This is again for quiz sections. You might not want to schedule more than one in a row. I like reviewing right before and find that works so have a bunch in a row would hurt me.

Those should help. I don't know your major but for engineering scheduling is harder than liberal arts. In LA 3 credit hours means, 3 hours in class at the most. In engineering or sciences, 3 credit hours means a 2 hr lab, 2 hr disc, and a 1.5 hr lecture. They don't exactly match. Also I can't deal with having more than one type of thing on the same day b/c it will get repetitive (phys lab & disc? no way). Also your brain will often be worn out after an intense math or science lecture (not a time to be sticking a quiz section).

My schedule first semester: MTWRF 8 AM Calc, MWF Thea 199 12 PM, MWF Psych 3 PM, WF Chem Disc 9-11, TR Chem Lect 11-12, Chem Lab R 1-5. Those were the major ones I didn't include them all. But my classes were spread out, I didn't get much work done in between and they ended late.

This semester: TR Calc 2 Disc 10 AM, MW Chem Lect 11-12 Disc WF 11-1, Phys MW Lect 1-2:15 Disc F 3-5, Lab W 5-7, Calc 2 Lect MW 3 PM and you get the idea. I lie this much better. Mainly b/c they start later. And since I'm a night owl that is important. that 5-day 8 AMmer was a killer!

The hardest thing for me will probably be studying and retaining information for two different tests in a day.. Would Chemistry and Calculus, for example, back-to-back be very difficult? I wouldn't think so since calculus and chemistry seem to be more calculation and practice based (If you know it, you know it)....

I'm def. going to try and have biology separate from my other classes, though.. lots of memorization.

thanks for all the advice.. keep it coming!

My schedule this semester..

MWF: 8 AM-850 Freshman English II
9 AM-950 World Civ I
10 AM-1050 US History 1877-Present

TH: 8 AM-915 General Psychology
9:30 AM-1045 Principles of Interpersonal Communication

I also have the rare Wednesday honors meeting. I had three tests on one Monday and got A's on all of them :)
