Hi there. I'm interesting in scenic/set design for the theater. Just wondering which schools should I look into. Also, should I prepare a portfolio? Thanks.

A good friend of my son attends The College of Sante Fe for theatrical scenic design (his specific interest is in lighting design). He will be a senior next year and reports loving the school and the program. Check it out.

Carnegie Mellon School of Drama

The design program puts you with all of the designers (set, costume, lighting) for the first few semesters, then you move into concentrating on your specialty. Considered the top drama school in the country, and the design program is very collaborative with the other options in the school in classwork and in production work. I believe they admit 5-10 designers a year (but don't quote me on that). There is a total of 200 students in the entire Drama School.
