Next fall, i'll be a 2nd year intended math major, and a possible physics minor. Do you guys have any schedule advice, suggestions as to whether this is too much, too little, telebear phasing, etc. Thanks.

Math H54
Physics H7A
Comp Sci 3L
4th class (Possibly stats 21), or a fun decal

Total of 14-16 Units

Just a little background, by next fall I'll have already taken math 1B (A+), math 53 (?), and math 55(?), so I have a fair idea of what the lower div math classes are like.

A minor in a science is quite useless unless your major is also a science. It is more often that people major in a physics and minor in math because physics is math heavy.

So far, I’m getting solid A’s on my math midterms.

As far as the physics minor, I was thinking of doing it more for interest than practicality, because I plan on pursuing math more. I was hoping on going to grad school for math eventually.

Do you think it would simply be a waste of time to pursue the physics minor? I was holding back from the major particularly because I wanted to be able to fit some math graduate classes in during my fourth year.

I prefer theory more than just calculation. Of the lower divs, I prefer 55 to the calculations more common in 53 and 1B. I’m particularly looking forward to classes like math 115 and number theory type math which I’ve read about a bit on my own, and I guess that’s what I would like to ultimately pursue at some point.

I think your schedule looks good. You should take 4 solid classes. It is very doable. Just make sure that your honors classes have good professors. An honors class with a horrible professor is not worth taking.

BTW, as a CS major I’d like to recommend a CS minor to you, seeing that you’re taking CS 3. It’s far more useful and applicable than a physics minor, but will probably involve more time commitment since there are programming projects.

Thanks Orochi, I have checked out the professors for h54 and h7a, and they seem better than the professors teaching the regular lectures. Perhaps I’ll go for a solid 16 units than 12 solid units and 2 relaxed ones.

Sorry for the double post, I didn’t see your second comment.

I have heard that the CS major is a great complement to the math major, I just don’t think I have the interest to fully commit to the 61 series and beyond. I think I’m going to take cs3 and then take a few of the 9 series seminars, just to get comfortable with a handful of languages. Thanks for the tip though, best of luck with that program.
