Hey, So I've been looking through a lot of posts on getting into Kelley as a UD and took a lot of the advice on here. Hopefully my schedule is simple but I'm a little worried about second semester. Also my advisor told me to "challenge" myself since Kelley loves students that push themselves hard but I couldn't possibly risk taking 17+ credits with tons of weed-out classes freshman year.

Fall:
CSCI-A110 - C.Pope - MoWe 11:15AM-12:30PM (N&M)
*MATH-M119 - A.Dabrowski - TuTh 2:30PM-3:45PM
*BUS-X100 - D.Rubinstein - MoWe 4:00PM-5:15PM (S&H)
BUS-X220 - K.Dayton - TuTh 1:00PM-2:15PM - 2nd eight weeks
SOC-S100 - T.Hallett - TuTh 4:00PM-5:15PM (S&H)
HPER-E181 - TuTh 10:10AM-11:00AM

Lecture/Lab for X220 and A110 are on MoWe. 15 Credits in Total.

All the BUS-G100 and W170/131 classes were filled up with at least 3 on the waitlist spot so I decided to take X100 this semester over them.

I'm planning on taking K201 and W170/131 as the last two req's for kelley next semester.
I decided to take M119 over finite since I took Calc AB during my senior year and hopefully it'll be less challenging.

Should I be taking A100 sometime over freshman year or should I take it sometime over next summer with finite? (If I make Kelley that is...)

Appreciate any advice/thoughts.

Thanks!

Hey shinie. I was in the same boat as you last year, and your schedule looks solid. You were smart to get non 8AM classes, and you made sure to get some easy electives your first semester. One concern is that you may be missing one out of the 3 pre-reqs, you may need to take either m-118 or k201 the next semester (I’d recommend k201 because of a better grade distribution). A-100 is a good class to take if you buckle down and make sure you do well in it; the admissions board will recognize that you did well in a very challenging class.

Also, no harm in taking as few credit hours as possible. I took 14 the first semester and 12.5 the second.

Classes to watch out in: m118 m119 k201 a100 w131

Let me know if you have any other q’s!

If you get all solid B’s and take the minimum number of classes required to apply, you are guaranteed admission. It is not a good strategy to push yourself to the point of taking unnecessary risks before you get accepted. Do the minimum freshman year, get the grades, get accepted, then push yourself afterwards.

Also, IU often adds extra sections W131, X104, etc. as the summer progresses. So you might check the real time schedule every day to get into W131, if you don’t want to save it for next semester.

Copperiodide, congrats on getting into Kelley, and apparently doing it by taking the near minimum credits and easiest possible schedule. Did you get all solid B’s and higher? Also, did CSCI A110 help prepare you for K204?

Hey copper and bthomp thanks. Are you sure I have to take both M118 and K201 next semester? On the website it asks to complete three or more of the following classes: X100/G100, M119, M118, & K201.

I’m planning on taking X100, K201, and M119 for my three req’s by the end of Freshman year along with W131/170.

If I do get into Kelley i’ll probably sign up for M118 and A100 at a CC so I don’t have to jeopardize my chances during 2nd semester unless I feel confident enough.

Also how is sociology? I’m hoping it’s easier than most Gen Ed classes.

IU will not accept transfer credit for A100.
[Credit Transfer Service: Admissions: Indiana University](http://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/)
The only place other than IUB you can take A100 is IUPUI, where, in summers, it meets only one a week for six weeks.

You don’t have to take both finite and calculus if you take X100, and X100 is much easier than finite or calculus, so only take one of finite or calculus. But make sure you get a solid B or higher.

I was able to get a really solid GPA this year, so I was guaranteed admission (everything above a b). I was really lucky and was able to squeeze into Kelley
Honors as well because of the easy schedule.

Looking back, the best advice I can give is making sure you do well your first semester, participating/leading a few extra curriculars and using your resources well (x220 resume, recommendations from professors, grade distribution)

I skipped calc this year and took it during the summer at my local community college, I feel it was a good call.

Shinie, sociology is a good class to take for an easier A. You should also try and make friends on your floor with other business majors taking the same classes. It’s important to have someone to remind you of deadlines and help with homework/studying.

CSCa100 helped in k201/204 quite a bit in excel, but that’s about it. The thing it helped the most in though was definitely GPA. I recommend it

Sounds like you made all the right moves. Minimum difficulty schedule (26.5 credits), all B’s and higher, got the easy A and exposure to Excel in CSCI A110, protected your GPA, took only one of finite and calculus, had lots of time for EC’s and probably not a lot of stress during the year, AND you got into business honors-- that is awesome.

Contrast that with a student who came in with a very high ACT score that posted here last year who was not a direct admit and took the hardest possible classes at IUB, including finite and calculus the same Fall semester, M211 in Spring, and both econs-- erroneously thinking if he impressed Kelley with a difficult schedule that he would be admitted. The one bad grade in M211 probably kept him out-- and taking that class was completely unnecessary.

Congrats again! You will have incredible opportunities in business honors.

Thanks Bthomp, it really means alot coming from you! As I recall, you and calcruzer were the ones who helped me choose my schedule so I really owe alot to you.

I’m just hoping I can help others that were in my similar position.

Hey congrats copper on the business honors. That’s very impressive and it gave me a lot of hope that I can possibly do it too!
Also last question…

Would it be a better idea to take A-100 my first semester with my current schedule or during my second semester which will consist of k201, w131/170, x104, gen ed…?

Thanks for all the advice from both of you.

Second semester A-100 grades are traditionally better. But with your course load you should probably take it first semester. k201 and x104 are both pretty time consuming classes
