Schedule conflicts

hi, my pass 2 was yesterday and i really need to get into ecs 10 (for my major) but i am on the waitlist position 7 at the moment. do you think i will have a chance of getting in?

also if any of you are familiar with the davis campus because i hardly remember the distant between buildings…do you think i can get from the olson building to the wellman building in ten minutes on bike?

thanks

At Summer Advising, I remember the student affairs officer telling us that it's important to waitlist for ecs 10 during pass 2 and the computer science department will try to accommodate the extra students. I'm not really familiar with the campus but looking at the map, it doesn't seem like Olson is really far from Wellman, so it shouldn't be that hard.

On a side note, were you given a ECS 10 vs 30 sample problem?

will it be really terrible if you don't get in? this is just a if, but if you don't get in, cant you take it next quarter? (just wondering)

this is the problem I posted earlier...waitlisted for a prerequisite in your major is not what you want, but their are few alternatives.

to roldie: yes i got the sample problem and i couldnt do it since i never had experience in coding

to user87: since i have no experience in coding i wanted to take ecs 10 to see if i even liked it in the first place therefore it would be pretty terrible if i dont get in cuz ecs 10 doesnt even count for my major, so i would be like 2 quarters behind if i didnt get in.

also to roldie: i remember the lady told us to waitlist during pass 2 also so hopefully i get in.

Well, if you are not certain that you will like CS, then you may as well work on your GE. Not like you have a choice if you don't get in ECS 10 though :p. You could try looking at some C tutorials online and see if you understand/like programming. I had no previous programming experience and was able to write the program after reading an old C++ (only like the first two chapters) book that I borrowed, so it's not too bad.

Everyone should be concerned that freshman get the classes they need so they can fullfill required sequences within four years...and have time to explore alternative majors early on.

No one should be forced, coerced or made to take "The History of Bats" because they couldn't schedule the classes that they wanted and this course was currently had seats available.

This is college, you should be able to study what you want, not just what is available to you and convient to the school.

Write your reps in Sacramento, have your parents write, and their friends too.

What's the class size for ECS 10? If it's a large class then you'll probably get in, but if the enrollment is limited to like 30 then chances are you won't get in - but go to the first lecture anyway to see what the prof says about waitlisted people, a lot of times they'll just give you "permission to add" numbers. Keep checking your position as time gets closer to the class start, you'll probably move up before then.

As for olsen to wellmen - it's pretty close, you'd even be able to walk (just cutting across the quad).

Nothing annoys professors more than little freshmen having thier parents call. This is college, learn to solve your own problems and leave your parents out of it.

i dont know about this, but i heard .....that if you still cant get into a class you want, go to the class anway and participate or something, make yourself noticed (to the professor i think) to show you really want to take that class and the professor will let you in? not sure, someone told me this. but anyway, cachild3, i hope you get into the class!

yea ill try that out user87.....thanks alot anyways you guys

pearlinthemist, i just checked and i am in 6 position on the waitlist and the cap is 31 but there are 4 sections so maybe the total is like 124?

Pearl in the mist...this is college and you or someone is paying for this education so students should be able to get into their majors prerequisites..political action is what is needed to get funding to our Universities before it takes ten years to get a bs degree. If students, parents and future students and parents do not get legislative support for your school...who do you expect to do it for you?

you might also try other sections - some sections have lower enrollment than others because one discussion time is prefered over the other. But I wouldn't loose your 6th person slot just to test the other times. I would just show up at the other discussion times on the first day and ask if you can add to that section. If people don't show up to thier first discussion or lab and there are people waiting to add, they'll give people that are there priority.

Yes this is college and yes we're paying for it. I haven't had any problems ever getting into a class I needed to graduate - I'm graduating next year (4 years). A lot of people end up changing majors along the way which adds a time crunch to get the required classes done - and usually extends the time the student is in college. The only class I was worried about getting into was English 104E, which is held in a computer lab & only one section time fit into my schedule. Petitioning the professor or getting my parents to call him wasn't going to change the fact that there were 25 computer stations and 30 students who "needed" to be in that class. I started out as #6, and by the first day of class I was #3, and it took a week before I was enrolled because enough people had to drop. Some things just can't be solved with political action.

Check the opened course list, I think they opened up another ECS 10 class.

yea i just saw it, its section b01.

but i am in position 4 now and the current class and teacher fit in well with my schedule.

Anyone know who will teach this new section and if I have a good shot of being added while in position 4?
