Prospective Kelley student so I need a 3.0 and some input

Freshman at Bloomington first semester 2013
*I'm coming in having 16 credits (AP Macro-4, AP Micro-4, AP USH-4, and ACP Calc B-)

Looks like a solid schedule. I’m not familiar with the non-Kelley classes, but k201 is an easy b or better if you keep up with it, finite isn’t too bad (and coming in with calc credit seems to indicate some strength in math, in which case I would go so far as to call it easy) and a100 is easy if you keep up and use the practice exams.

1995, a lot of students get a gpa higher than 3.0 and get rejected from Kelley. You need, for guaranteed admission, all solid B’s and higher and to take the minimum required courses to get into Kelley in order to get guaranteed acceptance. [Current IU Students: Undergraduate Program : Kelley School of Business: Indiana University](<a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley) From that standpoint, you already have a strike against you with your B- in ACP calculus. Which calculus is that? Obviously it would be less of a strike if it is M211 or higher rather than M119.

Among the requirements to get into Kelley as a standard admit are

◦One course on the IU Bloomington campus from each of the following areas: ■Business Analysis (BUS-A 201, BUS-A 202, BUS-L 201, ECON-E 201, ECON-E 202, BUS-K 201, or BUS-X 201)
■Mathematics (MATH-M 118, MATH-M 119 or ECON-E 370)
■Communication (BUS-C 104, BUS-C 204 or ENG-W 131)

◦One additional course on the IU Bloomington campus in any of the areas above, for a total of four Kelley admissions courses.

Notice that is doesn’t say anything about a 3.0+ gpa. You want all solid B’s and higher.
I am guessing that Kelley will count your B- in calculus as having been taken on the IU Bloomington campus. At least, it probably appears that way on your transcript. You should check your transcript in Onestart to see where it says you took calculus. If your B- in calculus counts toward the four classes needed to apply to Kelley, then you might want to consider not taking finite. I think K201 in fall and X201 in spring would be easier grading than adding finite to your schedule. This advice is based on how many students got a solid B or higher in finite, K201, and X201.

Last fall semester, 49% (993/2019) of the students who took K201 got a solid B or higher; in Spring, 67% (415/616) got a solid B or higher in X201.

Compare that to M119 and M118 last fall and spring:
M118 fall – 1635/4100 40%
M118 spring – 524/2039 26%
M119 fall – 513/1982 26%
M119 Spring – 338/1313 26%

Also, next spring I would take C104, as it is a very easy B. You might stay away from W131 until after getting accepted to Kelley, as probably nearly all of the W131 teachers are graduate students and some of them have very unrealistic expections and grade harshly.

Since you live in Indiana, know that Ivy Tech offers classes that can substitute for W131, L201 Business Law, Finite, both intro econs, and calculus-- some of which you already have credit for.

I don’t know all your goals, but you could just take only 12 credits per semester this fall and spring and easily have enough credits to apply to Kelley. Much less stressful than 16 or so per semester. Also, you probably want to get some A’s to help compensate for the B- on your transcript, which will probably appear as having been taken on the Bloomington campus on your transcript. My son did W131 in high school ACP, and the course was listed as being taken in Bloomington even though it was taken at his high school.

bthomp, son got 2 on AP Statistics from high school, will Kelly decline him because of this ? if so, it is kind of wasting time to apply for Kelly.

Kelley won’t look at his AP scores.

thanks a lot, hkem.

@bthomp My academic advisor said that they were counting it as taking it at my high school not at bloomington and it was M211.

I will be taking BUS-X 201 and BUS-C 104 next semester.

Sounds like you got penalized for even taking M211 in ACP then, as it appears you are locked into taking finite instead of M119 for your qualifying Kelley application course from the math group of classes. I wonder if you could still take M119 and use it to get into Kelley. If you look at past CC threads, a lot of people who had no trouble with calculus had a very difficult time with finite. You can get a great idea of what finite will be like by watching “The Finite Show” at this link:

I guess they have more than one type of transcript at IUB. I even checked the paper transcript the registrar sent my son after he graduated and his ACP W131 was listed under Bloomington campus. Again, you would probably breeze through M119 if you took it and then have the math part of the application finished; and complete the rest of the minimum requirement by taking K201 and X2

Hi Christopher,

Thank you for your email. The Standard Admission process for Kelley is based solely on your academic performance here at IU. Therefore, your B- course will not affect you. However, you must make sure to maintain Bs or higher in every course during your freshman year, especially in the business admission courses. Doing so will guarantee you admission for fall 2014. If you are ever concerned at any moment about your grades, do not hesitate to 1) seek out assistance from Kelley Coaches (tutoring from upper classmen who have gone through all of these courses and did exceptionally well), your professors, as well as your residence hall tutoring options and 2) come meet with us directly to discuss your grades and semester schedules to make sure you are taking a good balance of coursework.

For more information on Standard Admission, please review our website for specific guidelines [Current IU Students: Undergraduate Program : Kelley School of Business: Indiana University](<a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley).

Regards,

I asked Kelley Admissions directly and received this response

I guess they have more than one type of record for grades, as your transcript probably lists Bloomington campus for M211. As far as not counting previous coursework, the old admissions requirements web page said they considered all coursework from previous starting IU on the transfer student admissions page, but that statement is gone now. And the current IU student admissions page does explicitly state now that “This is a new chapter of your life, and we’re only looking at what you’ve done since you’ve been at IU,” so that is a significant change from past years.

I would still think about taking M119 instead of finite for your Kelley math class, as it would likely be easier for you than finite. Your chance of getting a “W” in M119 would be extremely small with your calculus background.
