Hi, I 'm going to be entering Duke this Fall and I need a little help choosing classes. Let me tell you high school never looked so easy before. I definitely wanna do premed but i wanna take econ and business courses as well. I just need some advice before I enroll in classes. Unfortunately I have the 3rd registration window, so most of the courses will be gone. Originally, I planned on taking both biology and chemistry 1st semester but i dont know if thats too much. here is what i am thinking:

1st Semester:
Writing 20
Biology 26L (I got a 5 on my AP Bio Test and I heard Bio25 is a *****...however i cant find 26L on ACES?)
Chem 21L (I probably got a 4 on my AP Chem Test, but i don't feel that comfortable with chem...should i just take 22l instead or should i stick with 21l)
Econ51 or Spanish (Latin?)

I took 3 years of spanish in high school and i wasnt too thrilled about it. i know its useful as adoctor in america, but would latin be better for the mcat?

also is econ51 hard. i had 1 semester of econ in high school and i did pretty well, but i heard that econ51 is a weed out class

Bio 26 isn't offered in the Fall (at least this year) like many others have found in this forum, sorry. You can try taking one of the other bio classes that's useful for premed. I don't know what they are but they're in one of these threads still floating around. If you got a 4 in AP Chem, it means that you're at least proficient in chemistry, so I would suggest taking Chem 23. It is accelerated and the labs are graded on accuracy, but it replaces 21 and 22 so its kinda the in-between level of difficulty when it comes to Chem. Latin is only useful for the MCAT if you take several semesters of it and focus on vocab. 51 is a weedout class, but if you want to take any Econ/Business courses at Duke and don't have AP credit, you'll need it so its better to get it over with.

Ahh don't take chem 23. Chem 23 is chem 22 on steroids (same material but goes into the physical and thermodynamic theory of each concept way deeper, is way harder, and you're graded on the curve against students who already did well on the AP). If you really think you need chem review, take chem 22. But as long as you're proficient in general chemistry, you can even take organic, as it builds upon basic concepts but not necessarily the deeper stuff.

From what I hear, bio 26 is not worth taking unless you're a bio major. It is also hard to get into good bio classes as a freshman, especially as third window.

If I were you, I would take chem 22, econ 51, writing 20, and an easier elective you might find interesting. Chem 22 and econ 51 are moderately hard and writing 20 is time consuming. That wouldn't be a bad schedule to adjust to for college.

i've heard that chem 22 is useless for those with AP chem credit... you cover a lot more in chem 23 (including some orgo) so it prepares you VERY well for orgo.... i'm contemplating whether to take chem 23 or orgo... i think chem 22 could just be a waste since it won't prepare you as well for orgo as 23...

could i take chem 22 first semester and chem 23 next semester...would that be sufficient enough to prepare for orgo. i mean i feel confident about stoich and basic chem, but i wanna review reactions, kinetics, equilibruim, thermochem, etc.

sorry another question: what about the math requirement for premed?
i got a 5 on my Calc AB, but I am not eager to take advanced calc in college...so should i take math 31 OR 32? do you have to do lab too?

No, you can't take 22 then 23 (23 is basically parts of 21 and 22, but on crack). The depth at which material is covered in chem 23 is way harder than what you need to know for chem 151, that's why I recommend against taking 23.

There's no math requirement for pre-med other than math 31 and 32, which are required for the physics requirements.

Actually, I would disagree with the chem 23 material being more in depth than 21/22 assertion. I've seen the stuff that Warren Warren taught and it's definitely stuff I wouldn't touch with a 10ft pole. I took chem 23 and, except for the weird kinetics lectures, didn't think it was too deep.

Note: the kinetics lectures I had were extra materials taught by the teacher and 99% wasn't required or tested.

As for chem 23 preparing you for orgo...forget about it. Orgo is 0.1% gen chem and 99.9% new stuff. While it is true that Chem 23 contains some orgo related concepts (Toone taught orgo), most of that stuff will leave you scratching your heads in confusion. It is taught without background and is more of a footnote than any actual preparatory work.

Maybe when you are taking orgo, you will remember some of that stuff and go "Ohhhhhh, so that's what he meant....how....interesting" but beyond that, I doubt it'll be of any benefit.
