Schedule Planning for Fall 2009

Hi, current freshman EECS major.

I still need to get these lower div classes out of the way:

CS 70
EE 20N
EE 40
CS 61CL (no CS 61C fall 09)

2nd half of R/C
Lower/upper div humanities

Particularly the technical classes, in what order should I take these classes? In other words, which ones should I take first for Fall 09? For example, I was told it would be good to take Math 53 before Physics 7B because knowing the math helps in the physics, even though 53 isn't a prereq for 7B.

Also, it seems like EE 20N, EE 40, CS 61CL are all lab classes. Does this make a difference? ie, is it bad to take three lab courses in one semester? Two?

Any other such pieces of advice? Any recommendations in general?

Appreciate the help! Thanks.

First of all, avoid taking three lab classes in the same semester. You don't want to burn out. I took CS 61CL and EE 40 in my sophomore fall semester, and they totalled 9 hours of lab per week, which for me was enough.

I suggest that you take Math 53 before Physics 7B, and Math 54 before EE 20 if possible. In general, having the appropriate mathematical background is very helpful because you gain insights into concepts that most other students don't have.

If you're considering going into CS, take CS 61CL as early as possible as it is a prerequisite for many upper-div classes. As for EE, depending on which specific area you're more interested in, you want to take either 20 or 40 to go with CS 61CL.

Anyway, I was at a similar position at the end of freshman year except that I had finished Math 53 and CS 70. For my sophomore fall semester, I ended up taking CS 61CL, EE 40, Math 54, and UGBA 101A. Hope that helps!

Hey thanks for the response.

I've taken 54 but not CS 70 yet. As for the EECS classes, it seems like I'd be more interested in EE instead of CS. Would putting off CS 61CL be recommended?

PS What's UGBA 101A? Did you take that for upper div humanities or what?

If you're into EE, then there's no rush taking 61CL early. You might want to wait until it's 61C because most EE students don't seem to enjoy the 6 hours of CS lab per week.

Yes, UGBA 101A (Microeconomic Analysis) is for upper-div humanities and series requirement (I had taken Econ 1 the semester before).

Why do they even have a 61C vs 61CL? Instead of lab, do we just have discussion in 61C, or how does that work? Pros/cons? Learn more in one or the other, easier class in one or the other?

So far I'm coming up with..
EE 20N
EE 40N
CS 70
Humanities (2nd half of R/C..Anyone have recommendations for easy humanities courses? tbh I don't really care about humanities.)

Thanks again.

CS 61C will actually have significant lectures, which may be enlightening. The "L" series tends to work under the assumption that students learn mainly from lab anyway.

If you haven't taken 7B, I don't know about taking EE 40. I believe it is a prerequisite, and EE 40 can move very, very fast.

If you've done 54, good idea to do EE 20. You may not get Babakued, if with appropriate background =]

I am taking 7B this semester, so I believe EE 40 will be fine

As for registration, which to phase I/phase II?

EE 20N, EE 40, CS 70, Humanities

definitely phase I the humanities. those lower div ee courses almost never get filled. cs 70 does occasionally depending on the professor, but rao isn't popular.

Well cool, it doesn't seem like most of my classes are in high demand this semester. Any other opinions or recommendations?
