my morning classes end between 11:50 and 12:15 then i have one class at 3 mwf and 3:30 on thurs. does it make sense to move up this later class or keep it as is. it is chem 135. my professor is currently johnson and would become walters.

that's really a personal choice. i've found that i can't have spaces like that between my classes-- it makes me antsy and i'm much more likely to skip the afternoon class. i'd rather sit through a few straight... i know a lot of people who feel that way.

then i also have friends who love having a couple hours of space between classes, particularly if they live near those academic buildings and can use that time for a nap, food, or getting work done.

have you looked at any professor rating sites for the differences between the profs you mentioned? that could make a big part of your decision for you.

completely agree with lindz here. i hated the long breaks i had in my schedules last year. i only did it so i could have fridays off. if your not getting that, then squeeze them together.

think of it like this: if you have to walk 20 min to go to class for 50 and then walk 20 min back to your dorm.. will you want to do that in the afternoon once again? not me. id rather walk 20, go to class for 3-4 hours, and then walk back. the way i figure it, in high school and every other level of schooling there were no lengthy breaks so everyone should be "able" to be academic for that long of a period.

the only gap i would allow is like 2 hours for lunch... waiting an hour in between a class is a waste of time in my opinion...

I have about an hour between each class on my schedule. I have no experience to verify this as an incoming freshmen, but I think I'll prefer it to the hs-style "neverending chunk of classes". Hopefully I will be able to get some reading or other homework done during the breaks, cutting down on the work I have to do after dinner.

What REALLY annoys me about my schedule is that two days a week I have these 3 hour seminars right up until 6:30. And on a couple days, stupid 30 minute breaks between class where I can get nothing done. Oh, well.

umcp11, as much as you think your going to do work during each break, don't count on it. I thought the same as well. I had every day planned out in my head and to be honest, it never goes as planned. Doing work between classes is always rushed and when it's nice out, you'd much rather go sleep on the mall like I did oh so often. Right under the trees on the left side of McKeldin (lindz and hinman, etc. know which ones I'm talking about!).

Plan on not having a plan. That might sound cliche, but it really is how freshman year is. You have so much freedom that if a friend pops by and wants to go do something, even at the most random times, chances are you will oblige and thus push back HW time. I just made sure to leave plenty of extra time to do things because I knew I was going to be distracted or somewhere completely different.

^Wow, if I fell asleep on the mall...I would definitely miss class.

You have a good point but at the same time, procrastinating made me miserable in high school. Seeing as I actually want to be happy next year, there are some things I'm going to try and have a plan about, like doing my hw as early as I can.

i guess the only good thing to do with an hour break other than eating lunch... is relaxing at the mall, read something like literature (if you are a bio major, good luck...), or going to an office hour. I LOVE 30 minute breaks... you can go to your next class without rushing and you're not "wasting an hour or two"

one-two hour breaks that aren't around lunch times are mistakes... if I nap, I'll probably miss class, thats why i said rest at the mall, not sleep or nap. i think three hour gaps are OK in the sense, you can fit in a workout in between classes if you live in north campus.. i mean the gym is close to ur dorm, so 3 hours is plenty of time to go to ur room, change, gym, come back to shower and then go back to class, and u got a lot of time to actually sit and do homework. if you are an engineering major like me, you will learn, you really can't get much done by sitting around for a few minutes, you gotta put in the time to get stuff done.

Yeah, I guess it depends on your major how useful a 1 hr break would be. I'm going to be doing journalism and history, so I think there will be a lot of reading and hour breaks will be useful to just chill and crack open a book. But we'll see, we'll see...:].
