My classes for the coming year are : math16a, espmc11, college writing r1a, and a seminar (14 units). I'm pretty sure that this schedule is completely do-able, but as of now, my schedule makes it so that all of my lectures are on monday, wednesday, and friday, while my discussions are on thursday. I have tuesday off. Is this a good idea? Or would it be better if I have a lecture on tuesdays/thursdays?

It’s really up to you. If you like the idea of having a day off for whatever you need to do (relax, sleep in, study, work, etc.), then keep it. Like you said the schedule’s doable and if you are okay with having all of your lectures on 3 days and discussion on Thursday, then keep it.

I personally had a schedule last semester where I had all of my lectures and discussions on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday. While it was nice to have classes on 3 days, some days I had over 6 hours of class and might have preferred it if it was a little more balanced out.

I prefer m/w/f lectures because they are generally shorter (1 hour long). I find 1 1/2 hour tu/th lectures to go on for too long. Especially for a class like Math 16A, I think you’ll learn more in a 1-hour lecture, especially if you make the point of preparing a bit (reading the textbook) before each class.

I agree with what kenf1234 says. In my schedule from last semester, I took Math 16A and I had 1 1/2 hour lectures since it was on Tuesday & Thursday. Like he said, you would retain a lot more in shorter lectures and the same will be said with all your lectures on M/W/F.

Ah, thanks for the responses! I think I might move College Writing to tuesday/thursday since it’s such a long class.

Moving College Writing from M/W/F to Tu/Th sounds like the right thing to do. I took College Writing R1A in my first semester at Cal and it was pretty much my only class on Tu/Th & I had it from 9-12. It is your longest class, but it’s good to put on Tu/Th because the class has very few people so it doesn’t seem like 3 hours a day.

^^Sounds like a very good plan to me too.
