Schedule questions

So I just got back from Preview and made my schedule:
MAC2312 (Calc 2), CHM2046 and CHM2046L (Chem 2 and lab), PHI2010 (Intro to Philosophy), SLS1102 (First-year Florida, required for me) and EGN 1002 (Intro to Engineering) My current major is Exploratory Engineering, I may switch it to mathematics if I don't like engineering.

So that adds up to a total of 13 credits. I am wondering if it is recommended that I take another GEN-ED class like PSY2012 since SLS1102 and EGN1002 are only one credit each and I assume will be fairly easy due to that.

You’re already taking high tier leveled calculus and chem classes at the same time. There’s a reason why placement exams were made for those two subjects. They’re not necessarily easy. Don’t you feel you have enough on your plate to deal with?

don’t underestimate calc 2 and chem 2. they should take up a lot of time. spend the extra free time getting involved on campus or something similarly productive.

i’d recommend some easy classes you could add on just to get out of the way, but as it turns out i get my worst grades in those classes :(

If this is your first semester then just stay with that, enjoy college, go party, have some fun. Overloading your first semester sucks.

I have 13 credits too, but I have MAC2312, PHY2048+L, cultural anthropology (social science and diversity, woo woo), and two one-credit engineering introduction courses (one of which is EGN 1002). I’m really happy with this schedule and I’m sure I’ll have ample time to focus on my critical tracking courses, which is fantastic. You shouldn’t add another class.

I have 13 credits also, but I couldn’t get Intro to Engineering. I’m going to see if they offer one that doesn’t conflict with other classes Aug 2.

calc2 is a weed out course. I recommend you keep it as is.

Can you tell me what exploratory engineering is? sounds interesting I think?

Gator, is Calc III a weed out as well? I’d imagine they’ve already weeded out everyone in Calc I and II

calc II was always the weed out calc.

lets see what some of the current students have to say.

haha, I look forward to not having to deal with series and sequences again :)

calc I is set up so that anyone who tries can get an A (read: has extra credit assignments), which is why its not usually called a weed out class

So what about just skipping Calculus 2 with a 5 on BC Calc Exam and going straight into Calculus 3? :P

do it. calc 3 is easier than calc 2. better yet, take it over the summer at a CC if you can

They won’t let you skip Calc 2 as an engineering major even if you get a 5 on Calc BC.

Not necessarily. They just don’t recommend skipping to Calc 3. It doesn’t mean they’ll try to stop u. Besides, from what I’ve heard, Calc 2 is supposed to be a weed-out course.

I don’t think they can actually bar you from taking the class, can they?

If I feel comfortable enough with knowledge of math to skip, why shouldn’t i be able to?

I’ve heard that they strongly recommend you not skipping to Calc III, but that doesn’t mean they prevent you from doing so does it?

I guess I’ll soon find out, I have preview on the 28th/29th. And I’m guessing they won’t be pleased I’m aiming to skip Chem I too.

They can’t stop you. I also took BC Calc this year, and I’m confident I’ll get the score I need to take Calc 3 - which is the class I signed up for.

Some engineering majors require Chem 1 and 2, while some just need Chem 1. Do you have an idea of what engineering majors you’re interested in?

ZapadniyRus and gatorboy426 are correct - Preview officials can’t actually stop you from taking any class that you have the prerequisites for. They will, however, recommend otherwise (in general, they try to give you the easiest schedule they can).

Awesome!

I’m looking at either Chemical or Nuclear Engineering. I’ve been going back on forth as to whether or not i should skip Chem 1. On the one hand, I want to go the pre-health route, and having an easier A in Chem I would be good for my GPA. On the other, I’ve never seen a point in repeating a class where I’m comfortable already with the material. I’ve also been sitting through Gen Chem II at a local State U and it doesn’t seem terribly bad.

Ah well…

What do you guys plan on majoring in?

@ZapadniyRus

I’m doing Chemical Engineering also. For most engineers with a strong basis in mathematics, chem 2 is “easier” than chem 1. Chem 2 tends to deal more with numbers, which makes it harder for some and easier for others. Padding your GPA is definitely nice, however.

I’m starting as a transfer at UF so I have 0 UF gpa going right into my chem.e. classes, lol.

I also found calc 2 harder than calc 3, but a lot of my friends had trouble grasping a lot of the concepts in calc 3; could be due to not grasping concepts well in 1/2.
