it’s a combination of both. the colleges will have specific class requirements for you to graduate (i.e. general education electives) and some required classes for you to receive a degree. it’s up to you to decide when you will take these classes (you will create your schedule, NOT the school), and to choose an elective when a requirement is designated as an elective (for example: say a general education requirement is 4 credits of a science elective. you can choose between any 4 credit courses, like physics 1, chem 1, etc…). after these classes are covered, you can decide what to take.

meet with an academic adviser and look in the college’s catalog for the requirements within your major. (btw, what is your major??)

Okay, thanks for letting me know. My major is in criminal justice but I am not sure about a minor yet maybe sociology or physcology.

^^oops, i see you posted your major the first time :P.

anyway, here’s sample curriculum for lots of different majors, all four years (it’s from NCSU, but it doesn’t vary by much from college to college. this will just give you an idea.)

Nanotech is right. You pick your schedule, the order in which things are done. To get into certain classes there may be various requirements. It’s definitely more open in High School.

As for what classes you should take, I’d highly recommend taking only classes that you are interested in for the first year.

^^agreed. i’m putting off general ed requirements until sophomore year because i reaaally want an internship freshman summer :D

I recommend putting of gen ed requirements until you have decided on a major. Too many freshmen at my college spend their first year taking their mandatory writing seminars, math, history, a foreign language, etc, only to find themselves as sophomores unable to decide between four different majors (for which they have only taken a single class each).

Thanks for the help guys

I suggest getting your gened requirements out of the way. This is what I’m doing (though, I’m mainly doing it because for my major it’s required).

At my school, you get to pick your schedule for the most part. You can’t pick English because you take the placement test at orientation and then once they’ve graded all of them, they place all the incoming freshmen in the correct class at a time that fits into their schedules.
