So... I hate prerequisites. I am a sophomore, 4.0 GPA, and still have to deal with these things.

My problem: I am a Biology/French double major, at a small state school. We have a course called BIOL 300 which is the gateway course into upper-level BIOL courses, and I was planning on taking it next semester- unfortunately, there are still prereqs I need to fulfill before I can do so, so that class is out.

So now, the only BIOL class I am eligible to take is Honors Botany... which is at the same time as the next French course I need. If I delay my French course, I will not be able to graduate on time with a BA in French. But I also don't think I should spend a whole semester with no biology. So I'm hoping to talk to the anatomy instructor and see if I can get into her class - I'm only missing one prereq for that, and I will be taking it next semester anyway.

Any advice? Drop the French? Try and get into Anatomy?

What are the pre-reqs for anatomy? Depending on the school/course, those can be kinda important…

I’d try to get into the upper level one, or at least talk to the professor and find out why the pre-req is in place. Ask if taking them concurrently is okay or not. I wouldn’t suggest just taking a random bio class, especially if it won’t get you anywhere degree-wise. Also, you will have stuff from your bio major… you’ll have that pre-req that’s keeping you out of the class you want.

Something else you might want to look into is summer session. Are classes you need offered over the summer? Could you take them then to catch up/get ahead/fix your schedule?

When are your class enrollment dates? I think you should contact your anatomy department and speak to them about your situation ASAP so you don’t need to drop either class. For my school, we just talk to the head of the dept and usually they are very understandable and will just waive the pre-reqs so you can enroll online. I’ve done 2 semesters where I’m taking both the pre-req and the main course at the same time.

The thing is, is the Honors Botany class required for your degree? It sounds like the French course is vital, whereas the Botany class is just a bio class (correct me if I’m wrong – you just didn’t mention anything about it being required). If it’s not required and you can’t get into the anatomy class after talking to the teacher, I would go with the French.

I also second looking into summer sessions so that you can take the pre-reqs nect semester and BIOL300 over summer. Then come spring 2014, you can take the upper level classes you want/need.

I think you should take the French. One semester without biology won’t impact your degree goals. If you really want to, you could look into taking a biology course this summer to make up for the missed semester. And I think your goal of a double major is a very good idea. A double major degree gives you more career options and more marketability in the future, and in the economy we have these days, that’s critical.

Or you can take one in the Winter session if you can afford it and if they offer it.

Botany is a required course - and the honors section is required for my honors degree. BIOL 300 is not offered winter/summer - a few biology courses are, but mostly gen ed’s are.

Thanks for all the advice! It’s really helping me to get things straight.
