I'm going to be a freshman in the fall 2007 semester. The past few days I've been looking at the 2007 courses online for the fall semester [www.jhu.edu/registr/schedule.html ]

I am kind of surprised to see that Biology and Macroeconomics are both scheduled for MTW at 11, with Intro to Poly Sci also on TW at 11.

This concerns me because I have varied interests and do not yet know, as a high school senior, whether I am more likely to go into medicine or business. I feel like I must take Biology as a freshman in the fall to be on the proper pre-med track, but I would hate to not be able to start on Econ until sophomore year, and with Macroecon needed as a pre-req for econ classes, it would suck having to declare major after soph year without even being able to experience any upper level classes.

What do you all suggest? Should I just take Chem (MTW 9) with Macro, and Bio later?

Thanks in advance for the help

If you take chem and macro, you wouldn't necessarily be behind in the pre-med track. If you take both, and then decide that you want to go the medicine route, you can always take bio later. Actually, most kids who are pre med here come in with AP bio credit, so they don't take it anyway. However, a lot of med schools don't take AP Bio credit as a substitute for their "1 year of Biology" requirements, so in their sophomore or junior year pre-meds will take Biochemistry+Cell Biology to constitute their one year of bio credit. So, if I were you, I'd take Chem and Macro.

comet thats very good advice Alex will be taking chem before bio. i would tell you to do the same. Plus you will also have 1 econ course and therefore can take your time deciding how you want to proceed in the future

what about Bio / Bio Lab + Intro to Business

this is going to be a really lame question...but, how do you guys tell when the class ends...because for some of the classes it only lists the start time like T 11 or like W 1 ? And can anyone locate the cell bio course on the course listing ? o.O
thanks!!

Unless it says otherwise, all classes are 50 minutes long (ie 11:00 to 11:50). Most professors are pretty good about letting classes out on time.

As for Cell Bio, it's not offered in the Fall. 020.305 (Biochem) is offered in the fall and 020.306 (Cell Bio) is offered each spring

thank you sooo much! that really cleared up alot of confusion lol =D

As for your question about taking Bio lab+ Intro to business, while it's completely your call, I think that you'd be better off doing your earlier choice of Chem+ Econ. Macro is an important pre-req for so many classes, and so many majors require it. Intro to Business isn't required for any of the majors or minors, not even the "entrepreneurship and management" minor (it is an elective you can take to fulfill the minor's requirements, but it's not required, if I'm understanding correctly). Plus, it's a lot harder to make up the 1 year of gen chem if you skip it than it is to make up the 1 year of bio requirement. That's my 2 cents.

shelly147's right about Intro to Business. It's a great class and the professor is really interesting since he has a lot of real world experience, but it's not required for the minor and is a prereq for few (if any) other E&M classes.
