ugh. new incoming ChE (BME concentration) freshman, just enrolled yesterday. My plan was to sign up for Intro to Eng, Calc III, Chem, Physics II, and an Intro to Philosophy (have to pick up some Honors credits...)

problem is: Calc III does not work with ANYTHING. Chem and Physics' labs both overlap with it...

my advisor suggested taking Calc next semester, saying it's more important to get Chem

is it a bad idea to take an entire semester break from math?

are there other required math courses that wouldn't require you to take Calc III first? I took statistics when I couldn't get differential equations to work with my schedule, and it was nice to get it out of the way. If chem is typically taken as a first semester freshman, by all means try to fit it in now. Being ahead of schedule is nice, but it takes a lot of planning to make sure you don't fall behind in another area because you are trying to get further ahead in other areas. Make sure to check out what your courses for Fall 2008 will likely be and see what prerequisites you'll need - Chem may very well be a prereq. If you're very worried about taking a semester off from math, consider retaking Calc II (perhaps at an honors level if it's available)...I have a few friends that did this, and they thought it was a good decision for them.

Is this a departmental or university advisor?

Ask a departmental advisor if you haven't -- the university one might think ChE is all chem and no math when it's closer to the other way around...
