I am a prospective chemistry major following a pre-med track. My FTCAP is next week. While browsing the 'Schedule of Courses' page to try to build my schedule, I realized there are NO open seats for Chem 110 or Chem 110H that would allow me to also take Chem 111. The times for both types of classes overlap and I need to take Chem 111 (lab portion of Chem 110). There's dozens of other sections for both classes that have oddly determined seat numbers (29, 103, 10, etc.). Do you think if I talked to the professor of the classes or my adviser, I would have a shot at squeezing into any of the other sections? I should have had my FTCAP in May because I sent my deposit in December, but Penn State screwed up and said I didn't take my placement tests when I completed all of them when I first could. Penn state literally didn't give me my FTCAP appointment until June after I straightened everything out with them. When I tried to reschedule, the only dates available were late July, so I kept my date. BTW, I am not in the honors college.

Being a prospective Chem major - I would hope that the advisers would work with you to get the classes you need.

My son had trouble scheduling Chem 111 and was told he could take it in the spring - but he’s in ENGR, not CHEM.

Thank you Grcxx3. Does the Engineering major require multiple semesters of chemistry too?

I considered delaying Chem 111, but the problem is I have to take the second half of Chem during the spring. Not taking Chem 111 or Chem 110 my first semester will really mess up my academic plans. Taking it online is not even an option because I need to physically do the labs.

You should definitely be taking at least chem 110 your first semester if you are a chem major. I would discuss this with your FTCAP advisors. They most likely will have a plan in place for their incoming chem majors if the class is still full then. YOu can delay 111 without any major issue.
