3 part question:

I am trying to double major in applied math and business, and I'm hoping I can phase I UGBA 10 and math 53 (w/ Neu...he seems better than Givental?)...I'm in FPF with a crappy Nov 4th phase I :/ What are my chances at getting anything I want?

I wanted to take ugba, 53, stat 21 and an easy breath....but I can only take stat 21 with Lugo, who has significantly worse ratings than Ibser or any other 21 prof. Should I take Econ 1 with Delong instead? (I'm hearing better things about Delong than Lugo)...I am pretty confident with my AP stats background though.

On a final note, I want to take either psych c162 or public policy c103 for the philosophy breath (supposed to be easy discovery courses), but seeing as they are both half filled already, what would be a super easy backup breath (easy A)? I still need philosophy, soc/beh, international studies and AC. I was thinking Sociology 3AC, but it's an 8am lec...is it worth it?

Thanks!

I’m also deciding whether I should take econ 1 during spring or next fall. According to an old post that I found on CC, the first time he taught econ 1, he assigned students homework before class even started. Also, I found one of his practice midterms online and I thought it was pretty hard.

Note that certain math courses can fulfill philosophy and values. If you do not end up majoring in business, then Economics 1 will fulfill social and behavioral.

Maybe ESPM 50AC, which fulfills AC and any one of philosophy and values, social and behavioral sciences, or art and literature?

@scoobysnacks EXACTLY! I saw those too! That’s why I can’t make up my mind :/

@ucbalumnus thanks! I was checking that out too, but if I go with econ 1, the lectures are at the same time :(…but after taking ESPM 2 this semester, I would rather not take another ESPM course. It’s just incredibly dry.

The good thing about him is he gave out 5% extra credit for iclicker points the last time he taught it. But the reviews are really horrible.

word. ^
As a senior, I kinda don’t want to take that class with him. I was hoping Olney would be teaching it. Grr.

I took Econ 1 in Fall 2010 (with Delong) and I don’t think he was that bad? Sure, he goes on lots of tangents but it was generally not too bad, and also the exams are very easy if you do the homework (which were quite easy as well) and practice midterms…

are there quizzes in section? I’m so sick of quizzes in section.

My section had a quiz each time we met, but according to the GSI it was for attendance purposes and accuracy didn’t matter (questions were straightforward)

dude…then why is everyone hating on him so much? haha Were you prepared enough for upper div econ? How hard would it be to get an A (I only took AP micro in hs) - in courserank, 20% got As, does that sound about right?

I have looked at his old syllabus. He says that the median grade in the class is a B- and if a lot of people do well, then he will curve it to a B.

So he curves even if people do well?

Well, looks like I’ll go with him if I get it for phase II…has anyone taken stat 21 with Lugo?

I might have worded it weirdly. Here’s the syllabus. His grading policy is on page 3.

[Syllabus: Fall 2010 U.C. Berkeley Econ 1: Principles of Economics](<a href=“Grasping Reality on TypePad, by Brad DeLong”>Syllabus: Fall 2010 U.C. Berkeley Econ 1: Principles of Economics)

ah…makes sense now, thanks :)

Also, what about the stat 20? Maybe you can take that instead since the reviews on Adhikari are better than the reviews for Lugo. And as for Tom, I can’t find anything on him.

I’m going to phase 2 econ 1, too. Right now, there seems to be plenty of spots. I have to take it this semester anyway since I want to declare econ major early.

meh, I think I’ll just wait on stat for sometime next year (I’ll focus on 53, ba10 and econ 1)…but then again…I don’t know if this is too much lol people seem to be doing just one prereq a semester.

I feel you on that - as much as I want to wait for a “better” prof, I just want to get these prereqs out of the way.
