Scheduling questions

I'm a freshman Kelley Direct Admit and in Hutton Honors College and I'm trying to come up with a schedule for second semester. I'm going to take BUS-A100, BUS-X220 and another BUS-X255 class, and some A&H credit. I'd like to take PSY-P 101 or 106 (the honors version of Intro to Psychology). I also need to take BUS-X201 or BUS-X202 (the honors version of Technology). I'm in BUS-K204 right now, and it is very difficult for me. Should I take the honors version of BOTH these classes? Or should I just take one of them honors? If so, which one might be better for me to take honors?

You might have decided already. This is also an interesting question to me.

Students in P106 got mostly A/A+ from Professors Motz and Jones. In this case, P106 would be a better choice. On the other hand, if a professor only gives 15% of the honors students A’s, it is not worthwhile to take his/her session.

Some professors such as Neher for X204 teaches both honors and regular sessions. His gave out more A’s to his honors students. He probably measures all his students in both classes with the same ruler. Depending upon the ratio, one could go either way.

The registering process is challenging for freshmen without 10-15 credits from the high school. The easy graders have their classes filled up long ago. Some tough graders have got only 20% of the students. S2 decides to put off taking a course until next Fall because of these considerations. Overall, it seems to be a fair system building upon students’ attained credits. Good luck to all the freshmen.

It’s pretty difficult to get less than an A- in any Kelley honors communications and technology classes. You will be doing group work with good students that probably will do well on group projects, and there are usually many, many chances for extra credit in these classes. So, if you are willing to do the work, an A- for working hard and doing extra credit is a pretty good trade. You don’t really have to master the content that much in honors classes if you do the extra credit work and get a good group.

I would not take two of K204, X106, X202, or X205 in the same semester, because of the group work involved. Spread them out over four semesters; there is no reason not to.

I don’t know if this applies to COAS honors classes, though. For COAS honors, just look for a high grading professor from past semesters.

Not much you can do about registration order, except maybe take a couple of classes before getting to IU and in summers after you get to IUB, if you don’t have a lot of AP credit. The students with the most hours definitely get the best schedules, and it makes a huge difference over the course of your four years to be able to register early vis a vis the people that need the same classes as you. My son had zero AP credit but put together ninety credits prior to Icore because of cc summer school and taking an easy one or two credit course each semester at IUB, so he is able to sign up for classes with the same high achievers with lots of credits every semester because they all know the best sections to get into and have the credits to register early. This helps make the school seem a little smaller, too, having classes with the same people each semester.

Bthomp1,

Would you know if it is wise not to take more than one of X204, X201, K201, and X104 in the same semester?

Thanks

I wouldn’t take two honors versions of these classes at once, because of the group work involved. I would just take one each semester, but I am very conservative work wise.

If you can help it, I think it is a bad idea to mix two of these group work classes in the same semester. In my X104 group this semester, there are 2 students who are also in X202. They are sophomore Kelley Honors students who put off presentations and aren’t taking the honors version this year because of their poor English skills. Trying to work around their group work schedules has really been a pain and has led to many nights spent in the Kelley school till 3:00 AM. When they have to meet with their X202 group because they have a graded module due at midnight, that means we can’t start our meeting until 12:15 AM.

I don’t think X201 has a group aspect to it though. Only the honors version.
