Scheduling stress!

I am seeing that some courses on the online bulletin already seem to be full (13/13, etc.) Is that the case?

Most of my friends at other colleges (good ones) are only taking four courses, but I seems like a lot if Columbia freshmen take five. Is that because core courses only meet twice a week? Do Columbia students just take on a heavier load?

Thanks!

I know what you mean… look at German I!

Yeah, it’s kind of perverse. I’m taking 5 classes + PE this semester even though I really need to take 4 to graduate on time.

So are these classes full because upperclassmen get to register in advance? And for these classes, are we totally out of luck?

how about the poli sci intro classes? i really want to take comparative and ir intros, but theres only about 4 spots for each of those classes… does that mean i probably won’t get to take them this semester, or do some upperclassmen drop when they come back to school?

There’s generally a lot of shuffle during the first week. That’s what I’m counting on to get Art Hum. Upperclassmen redo their schedules, people go first classes and then drop them, etc. Especially intro classes.

wow thats a relief… can i add classes after orientation week then if people drop after first class?

Yeah, you’ll have registration slots for a week or two into the semester.

I took an Intro to IR class that absolutely would not take any more people but that was because the room was literally filled to the max. It’s kind of pointless to ask us because our answer is always going to be the same: go to the prof the first day and ask if they’ll sign your add/drop form. If they don’t, then keep checking at your registration times to see if the class opens up. Otherwise, wait for next semester.

I really hope the intro to polisci classes open up.

How do you tell online if the class opens up? Do you have to constantly retry to register? Or is there some constantly updated people counter?

There is a people counter but it isn’t constantly updated.

You have to just keep trying to register by entering the registration number every couple of minutes during your registration period.

karot: how often do you think that professors running large lecture classes will add people beyond the limit if asked? is that a common occurrence or relatively rare?
