Scheduling

Hi,
For commuting reasons I currently have five classes pretty much straight through 11-7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It’s not that different from what I was doing in high school. Since I’ll be bringing my own food anyway, eating while walking to class isn’t a huge deal. I just wanted some opinions on whether this is really doable, since I worry I’m being naive about what I can really do.

Have you scheduled in reasonable breaks? What about things like faculty member office hours? Are you close enough that you can return to the school on MWF for things like meetings and office hours?

@lostaccount There is one half-hour break in the middle of the afternoon and fifteen minutes between each class (I have time to get from class to class), as well as the commuting time there and back (I’m taking the train, so I can relax or work during the commute as needed). I can go in whenever necessary during the week (and will do so if I need to see a professor), but the commute is long enough that I’d rather avoid doing so as much as possible.

That schedule probably is not ideal, but I don’t see why you couldn’t make it work. You are going to have to stay committed to getting work done at home on days that you don’t go to school, but it can be done.

It is manageable. Wednesdays are going to be hard when several professors assign reading or homework on Tuesday that is due Thursday. You’ll be mentally exhausted from Tuesday night and have a short window to prepare. When you get your syllabi, identify key projects and tests and start planning for the days where you end up with 2 or more tests on one day. Pretty similar to any student, just more opportunity for that to occur.
