For junior year next year, I have the option of taking an additional foreign language (Chinese) vs. another history class (AP US Government). I love languages and social sciences equally, and I'm not sure which I should take. I will be at the fifth year level for my first foreign language, and can continue with a sixth senior year which is what I intend to do.

So, as a probable international relations or political science major, which would look more appealing and focused to colleges? Chinese, which I could probably learn a year over the summer and take Chinese II, or AP US Government and another semester long history course (non AP).

I would suggest AP US Government, since from my experience Chinese I is extremely bland and annoying. On top of that, what is your other foreign language? Chinese (for sure) doesn’t mesh too well with English and depending on what other foreign language you take, Chinese could actually serve to hurt your first foreign language or even your English skills.

I would suggest AP Gov simply because you’d be starting Chinese the first time next year, I’m assuming? Unless you’re looking into linguistics or something, it’s a skill you can put off a little later. Otherwise, AP Gov would probably be considered a bit more rigorous than beginner level Chinese.
