Scholarhips for Undocumented

a little something for everyone to ponder.

do you know about the low income “factories” set up here in the united states where people work for below minimum wage?
do you know about the doctors and engineers being brought from outside the US to take 6 figures jobs because we don’t have any people qualified to do those jobs?

instead we choose (including me) to be worried about the minimum wage jobs illegals are doing picking berries. funny thing is that we won’t go for those jobs even if they’re offered to us.

so back to the question: are they any other schools except the ivies that would give full scholarships

Dabeeast – I resent when people say “do you know” rather than I think. Becuase I do not agree with you. I think that there are many qualified engineers in this country, but that many employers violate the law by bringing in people for lower wages on H-1B visas. The Times Square bomber came here on an H-1B visa. I am not blaming anyone for granting him the visa, but just that his backqround was publiziced. He attended a fourth tier school for computer science.

Yes, the US restricts the supply of doctors. I would submit that there are many americans who could succeed as doctors, but can not get into medical school.

If you are aware of employers paying less than minimum wage, you should report them. In my state, those complaints will be taken seriously.

I am not aware of any schools, and frankly none should, imho, provide scholarships for people who have or intend to live here illegally.

I believe I answered your question. You are an international student for most situations, but some states and colleges will give you private aid and/or scholarships and/or instate rates. You just cannot get any governement money or money from those programs and schools that use FAFSA to vet their students without going through the process as an international.

Kayf, most private merit awards , particularly from private schools do not ask for proof of citizenship. Some private schools will take their own app or PROFILE alone for their private funds for financial aid too. Also any international student aid is available.

kayf-- i’m sorry for not being politically correct. the sub minimum wage jobs are done in the prisons. it’s sort of a “earn some skills while you’re here” scheme. basically, they pay prisoners very little to get people to work in what would be considered factories.

and yes, i agree with you about the AMA and what it’s done to the field of medicine. the thing is that now,we have doctors and surgeons and other professionals coming from outside the country to take the highest paying jobs while we encourage ourselves to become nursing assistants and MA’s. Again, these people will be sending money back home to stimulate their economy.

so basically it’s the big 6 (which is done on the basis of academics) and a very few others that i’m still waiting for someone to inform us about

private schools could offer some money for undocumented students but most who offer aid asks for you to fill out CSS which require SSN. they do actually verify if the # is right so if they see funny stuff you could get into trouble… but yea, other than the big 6, I really don’t think there are any colleges… but I would search in cali because they tend to be more relaxed and stuff. I think CA is having a proposition that will aid undocumented students in college…
as for my other comment about going to college, well it will be useless for your friend because without SSN s/he can’t get a decent job and would probably have to work under the table for min wage if s/he is lucky. also, once you are illegal, unless there is a amnesty(not happening any time soon), you can’t become legal unless you go back to your home country and apply for visa to come to us.

as for the prison example, they should work… they are getting free food/shelter/health care in prison so it’s not like it’s unfair for them to work and contribute a little to the money the taxpayers have to pay for the prison system

@ilikepizza what i mean is that he could move to canada/australia/etc cos chemical engineers are supposed to be in bad demand. (that’s if the government hasn’t worked out anything by then)

Cpt, of course you’re write, I miswrote. But few colleges meet need other than the ivies.

Dab, I just wasnt thinkin of prisons. But given that they are provided food and shelter, I dont see their wages as unfair.

@kayf- you could argue that. but if you think about it, they’re taking factory jobs with benefits and paying people significantly less and without benefits. that money will most likely be used to buy cigarettes/drugs/etc

@dabeast91 ohh… yea then it makes more sense. but to get to those countries, you need visa, and your friend will have problems getting visas if s/he is undocumented. but if money is the big issue, I would focus on schools in CA (they tend to be the nicest toward undocumented students), and if the UCs are not affordable, community college will be ok too.

I dont think the prisoners actually get to keep the money.

@ilikepizza yea i know but you’ll be better of with a clean slate with skills that are very much in demand than having to pick fruits and waiting for a congress who can’t decide on a budget to learn how to do anything else. and it’s a way to take care of his family and all. (it’s really hot in CA to be picking fruits and what not – i know this from Grapes of Wrath)

if your friend is good with entertaining people, youtube could be a great job. and they dont require SSN
