scholars and freshman fellows

can someone please explain to me the difference between these two and what they are about. the maryland website makes this very confusing

bump…

Sorry, I don’t know anything about Freshman Fellows, so I cannot give you the differences. From what I could see with a quick search on the website, Freshman Fellows appears to be specific to Business school students? (or at least specific to individual majors). If you are referring to College Park Scholars, it is a living-learning community, and the people in your individual program can represent majors across different areas. Sorry, not much help.

As a freshman admitted to Smith, you are included in their Freshman Fellows program. You will take your entry level Business courses together with other Freshman Fellows students. There are also extracurricular activities available/required to complete the program. As a Scholars Student, you have a living and learning environment where you reside with other students in your “area of interest” and take classes together. It is no problem participating in both programs. However, there is a catch. If you select Business, Society & Economics (BSE) as your Scholars area of focus, you will take your entry level BMGT class with other Scholars BSE students (not necessarily in the B School) and participate in the Scholars BSE colloquium. There are lots of interesting trips, speakers and extracurricular activities available to the Scholars BSE students. The BSE program is coordinated by a fantastic Prof from the B-School (M.W.), so there is a lot of synergy with Smith, plus you can participate in any of the activities designated for the Freshman Fellows program on a space available basis. My DD elected the Scholars BSE and it has worked out well for her. She is “connected” with the Scholars kids and is active in the BSE program. However, she has not participated in as many of the FF extracurricular activities due to time constraints. I highly recommend the Scholars Program as a Living & Learning program and from there, follow your interests… and you will be happy.
