Quite the decision. I have to pay for my own college (or rather I have told my parents I will, as I make good money). So what would you choose?

I think I'm starting to lean toward Baltimore County. Because anyway I look at it College Park isn't worth my $80,000 hard earned dollars.

Also, I am planning to continue my education later. Hopefully at MIT in genetics, will going to Baltimore as opposed to College Park have a negative effect on this?

Also, does Baltimore have a good Chemical Engineering/Biochemistry program?

Wow! First of all, that is SO commendable that you are paying for your education like that. The departments you're interested in are great at both UMBC and College Park - it's excellent that you got a full-ride a UMBC. Personally, I never liked UMBC so much. It felt too much like a commuter campus to me. But I have friends who go there that love it. I am sure you'll have an enjoyable college experience at either campus. Academically, they are very similiar.

I guess the question is, what kind of money is "good money". Although I could have gotten a free ride at a lot of places, my parents were willing to pay for CP over some small liberal arts school I wasn't feeling. But point 1: UMBC is no small liberal arts school and point 2: you probably don't make as much money as my parents!

ESPECIALLY if you are serious about grad school, UMBC, hands down, no question. My mother knows many people who attended college with plans to go to grad school but could not afford it. You'd have great career prospects with an MIT degree, and you would be able to afford it if you are not footing your undergrad bill. UMBC and CP both have excellent placement for grad school. In fact, many very smart kids from my school chose scholarships at UMBC over CP with the cost of grad school in mind.

Good luck! You'll make the right decision and be very successful in the end, I'm sure :).

i've actually chosen to go to umbc with a full ride over cp next year for the same reason. i plan to go to medical school and thus it wouldn't make sense to spend a lot of money on undergrad (especially with med school costs approaching $40-50k a year). it's a great idea to chose umbc especially if you major in any type of science. most people agree that umbc's science programs are better than cp's.

Well, my earnings fluctuate from month to month, but money is made through Yahoo Publishing Network and other online advertising companies. The earnings arent guarunteed like a regular job, but for the most part the profit is low to medium 4 figures every month. I have made low five figures and a lot of growth is posible and hopefully will occur with more free time. On the other hand, I can get banned from YPN tomorrow, and my revenue can be cut it half. A lot of things are uncertain in the web master industry. I do have enough saved for 2+ years of tuition.

i was in a similar situation. i had to choose between nyu (120,000 debt) and umd (full ride). i realized that a six figure debt was too much and that i wanted to go to a great business school for my mba. but look hard... i'm compromising by using some of the money like 2,000 that i would have spent at nyu to visit nyc often and try to get internships there. i think if i can get out of debt in college while still having had some of a nyc experience i'll be happy.

But they just built a bunch of new dorms. It's not like if you weren't a commuter, you wouldn't have a lot of other dormers to hang out with. I would say the sports games are probably pretty dead, though. Except for lacrosse...

Why don't you do an overnight at UMBC? Second-hand info is crap anyway.
