Scholars Life

I recently got accepted into the scholars program. I just filled out my preferencing form, and none of the programs I picked require scholars housing. Is it a better experience to live in the scholars dorms? Will I have a better social life if I don’t? Thanks!

Every Scholars Program has an associated Residence Hall. To see them click on each individual Program from the following link

Thanks!!

Do you think that living in a scholars dorm instead of normal housing impedes your social life?

My son did scholars and a big difference in the honors v scholars housing is that honors dorms are scattered throughout campus. In contrast, scholars dorms are all within a single quad - the Cambridge Community. So, all the scholars program dorms are right next to each other, creating more of a larger community. My son really enjoyed living in Chestertown (despite lack of a/c) because of its proximity to Eppley Rec Center, Xfinity Center, engineering/science classes, the Incon (the nickname for the convenience store since it’s hours are somewhat "incon"venient), and LaPlata Beach (a large open area between Cumberland and LaPlata where volleyball games and other events are often held spontaneously). So, yes, I would def recommend living in scholars housing for scholars community events. Scholars also holds special scholars sections of English 101 in the community center in the middle of the quad, bbq’s, and other community events.

Here’s some info on the Incon

@imtalkinbout - I don’t see any reason why living in a scholars dorm, or honors dorm, or nay other LLC dorm would impede someone’s social life

Has anyone received their scholars program assignment yet? I think honors assignments came out this week, so hopefully scholars will be soon, too!

My D is accepted to the scholars. As of last night, we have not heard any news about their scholars program election result. Hopefully it will become available soon.

I agree with SoofDad. Any sort of smaller program (Scholars, Honors, FLEXUS, FIRE, CIVICUS, etc.) doesn’t impair your social life at all! If anything, it helps you make a ton of friends faster. Either way, you’ll still make friends outside of your program, I promise.

I have not received my Scholars assignment either. I read in another string that someone was told they would be released in a week or so (and that was a comment from the end of last week). If that is accurate it will be any day now.

@red98blue I think it was me who shared the message of about a week for notification, which was what the person who answered the phone at the scholars program told me. Guess we’ll hear pretty soon since honors students just found out.

Does anyone know if scholars program placements are out yet and if they are did u receive an email or a letter?

@Mooshie123, my son is in Scholars and we have not received anything yet.

Thanks so much!

We haven’t heard anything by email or mail yet, but were able to register for orientation for scholars by calling the orientation office. We couldn’t just register online since she didn’t have a scholars program assignment yet.

I did read that letters and emails will be sent in early March, so maybe next week ?

Received notice of Scholars program today. FYI you need to login to Coalition, Go to checklist to see which one you were slotted in

Anyone get any mail from their college or specific scholars programs yet? Only mail we’ve gotten has been generic. We’re also still holding pout hope for a merit scholarship from the Department she’s entering, although maybe they don’t have them. She gave up lots of merit $ from her two safety schools, so it’s tough to go full pay to UMCP even though she’s committed to it.

No, we haven’t gotten anything. The school is now on spring break, so it might be a while.
