Scholars Notification Emails

feel free to post here if you receive one of the emails tonight

I just did! Echols, yay:) UVA 2014!

i wonder if the sent all of Echols out at once…

I got Echols and College Science Scholars. I was expecting the former since I had received notifications a couple weeks ago. The latter took me by surprise, though, and it certainly helped me handle the rejection from Stanford a lot.

^ wow congrats for getting both!!

I got Echols; surprised that I did, actually (I’m international) I thought the Echols e-mail was so sweet  makes me feel so wanted lol

(I also got a handwritten note from the admissions office at the bottom of the admissions letter :D)

I am so happy I made it, though I am not as qualified as others at my school who also got into Echols.

I got into Echols  The email was totally unexpected and a wonderful surprise! I agree with feathers.o’four; it was written so nicely. Makes ya’ feel so warm and fuzzy!

Do you think they could still be sending some? because I got a likely letter (not URM/athlete/legacy) and I got in today, but still no echols email. I just kind of thought that a likely letter, if unhooked, was a good sign that you’d get echols too.

I thought that a letter saying that we think you are an awesome student/scholar, and we plan on admitting you, kind of equated to the whole concept behind echols.

I can accept not being echols, I guess the letter just kind of gave me certain (false) expectations.

lol :/

Did anyone get notification yet about Rodman Scholars?

USN…wondering the same thing! To those who received scholar notifications…out of curiosity, did y’all also get likely letters?

I did get a likely letter, but I remember reading somewhere that getting a likely does not necessarily mean getting into an honor program.

I got a likely too, but Dean J said on her blog that there are students who never get likely letters who do get into Echols, and vice versa.

I got a likely and Echols notification, but I remember Dean J’s post mentioned above- a likely doesn’t necessarily mean an Echols acceptance. Super excited to visit Grounds in 2 weeks!

I know that she said that, I’m saying it doesn’t make any sense.

If UVA thought my academics were so stellar that they didn’t want me to defect to another school, then why am I not an echols scholar (just logically reasoning, not in terms of rules or regulations). They seem to be relatively synonymous concepts considering that I’m an unhooked applicant.

I wish UVA had never sent me a likely in the first place. I hate getting raised expectations for no reason. I hope that y’all understand that I’m not complaining, I’m just frustrated that my dreams of an idyllic UVA are less rosy.

Congrats to all of the echols scholars :)

I got echols but I didn’t get a likely
(unless the letter’s caught up in a web of post bureaucracy between VA and Australia – which is not probable)

got echols!!
I heard that the selection criteria for echols is pretty tricky… many applicants with stellar academics didn’t get in.

Likely Letters are related to admission. They are not related to the scholars groups.

As I mentioned before, you can apply to be in Echols and Rodman during the first semester if you want to be in those groups. Keep in mind that the vast majority of students are doing great work at UVa without being in those groups.

I wouldn’t discount not being accepted to Echols as a reason not to attend…unless all you care about it the ‘status’ of being called an Echols/Rodman scholar. The main benefits are elimination of area requirements (which depending on AP scores and language placement, aren’t terribly difficult to fulfill), priority registration (in my experience, you’ll usually end up getting in the classes you want at some point, either through Course action forms, or in another semester) and living in “special” Echols/Rodman housing, which is right next door to regular-admission housing.

There is no financial incentive, and for those who want to apply during 1st year, they still have that opportunity.

If you question your lack of Echols nomination, check out the Echols FAQ page, it is helpful: [Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) : Echols Scholars Program — Echols Scholars Program, Arts & Sciences, U.Va.](http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/echols/faq/index.html)

PS- Jefferson Scholars Program is run through the Alumni office and is not connected to the Office of Admission. (just as an FYI)

I got echols! And I was really surprised… I got a likely letter, but no separate Echols notification, so I was doubtful. Does anyone know what percentage of the accepted applicants are designated as Echols?

@rmadden: you are qualified, and you know it. SAT scores aren’t everything. :)

Also in shock that I got the Echols. Yipee!!!
