Scholars Preview Program

I got the email invitation for the Scholars Preview Program and I'm probably going. I posted about that in the RD thread and someone asked if it was just for multicultural scholars, but it appears that it's not. Now I'm a bit curious as to who they picked and why.

I'm a Latino female, and in my essay I wrote about how I wanted to take advantages of some of the programs at Penn and why I feel strongly about my major.

Anyone else going that can confirm if this is just for ethnic minorities/out of state students/something?

I called admissions the other day to ask and they told me it was a multicultural thing

but I am a white guy. and I got invited. ? do they want me to represent caucasion male culture? Like I have any culture…

You can teach me the caucasian way of…uh, eating?

Haha I don’t even know. Did you show any interest in other cultures in your essays, or something? I also wrote one about MUN so maybe they took that to mean that I’m a good candidate for a multicultural-program-thing?

Im pretty sure its multicultural because the website you register for is upenn.edu/somethingsomething/multicultural/register.

I was invited. I’m black.

I believe its a recruiting technique for less represented minorities. Instead of calling it a multicultural penn preview (or something of that sort), they call it “Scholars Preview.” Its much more flattering, and you’ll be around “people like you” and assured that you won’t be an ethnic outsider if you decided to go there.

Honestly, I prefer a more straightforward take on these kind of things, but I talked to an admission counselor, and the program is more detailed and involved (plus overnight) than the regular Penn preview. So its to our advantage. No complaints with that.

btw I did talk about being involved in cultural programs in my essay. So maybe, radco85, that has something to do with you being invited (if you showed interest in cultural events at Penn).

Yeah, I think it basically just means that somehow they think you’d be interested in cultural events, meeting people from other countries, or things of the sort.

I’m going anyway. Look out for a TINY, TINY, TINY (I’m talking I barely hit 5ft this year) latino girl :)

look 4 a 5’1 ft black girl. thatll be me haha!

Hm, I was invited to the scholars preview program, but I’m a white? I figured I might have been invited to represent a socioeconomic minority? (around 20k household income, questbridge applicant). I am technically a dual citizen, Germany, so maybe they’re counting me as an international student?

Anyway, who knows? I booked my flight today and will be going! I’ll be the really thin pale white girl with the really long brown hair. I’d love to meet cool people there!

As both an attendee and a host of Multicultural Scholars weekend (or whatever they are calling it these days), I can tell you that you will all have fun attending. One lucky Hispanic male will even get to room with me, but don’t let that deter you from signing up.

I booked the flight today, too! I’m terrified, I’ve never been on a plane on my own…and this is no little trip, I’m flying in from Mexico!

Ahh! I’m scared and excited already :D

I’m multiracial…well okay, I’m half-asian and half-white, but I didn’t get invited. I’m somewhat offended because this (white) girl posted on my status asking if I was going to the scholar preview program and I was like wth is that? So now I feel snubbed. Hahaha.
I mean, I wouldn’t have been able to go anyway…but still.

It’s also probably worth mentioning that the week you guys are going is Fli

Oh yeah, I don’t understand having previews right before Fling…last year when I was docenting (leading tours?) in Harrison, some parents/prospies totally ended up in an elevator with drunk kids (for those not in the know, Fling = lots of day drinking). Not the best impressions, haha.

@naomikt, I’m guessing it’s for underrepresented racial/socioeconomic minorities, and at Penn, Asian is barely a minority (I say this with lots of love, because probably 50-75% of my friends are Asian and I’ve been told I’m more Asian than some of my friends haha).

Would it be ridiculous(or maybe just impractical) to go to Preview Days on the 11th, request a host student for that night and then do Scholars Preview on the 12th (overnight with host again), leaving on Wednesday the 13th in the middle of SP? That’s the only way that it will fit into my college trip…

My D, Hispanic, is attending! Quite exciting for everyone. Looks like a great schedule. She is from Minnesota.

My S was invited but can’t go because he’s in a show next week…he’s wicked disappointed…but we are going to Preview day on the 18th and we will be there for a couple days. For those of you going have fun.

kayb, I’m terrified too ! I haven’t flown since I was a little baby >.< And I live an hour from the airport, so I’m gonna freak out about making it there on time !! But I’m too excited, I’ve never ever been to a big city before.

I will be there…white male. I think it’s either because I’m in MKSE or because I’m from Idaho, not sure. Anyway, looking forward to seeing you all!

How common is it to be going alone? About how many do you think will be up there just as students alone? My dad probably won’t be coming to cut back on costs, I’m flying up from Atlanta alone.
