Scholars Program A must??

Hi everyone,
Well I go to Pasadena city college and I found out about this scholars program for higher priority in UC and Call state admissions. So I naturally became worried because I haven't taken any of those scholar program required classes. On the up side, I have a 3.6 gpa with most of my transfer requirements met. So I guess my question is... how difficult would it be to get into a UC, is a scholars program almost a necessity?

Thank You

Scholars program is only like the icing on the cake. I think it only really makes a difference for borderline students.

Hey, I'm at Pasadena City College, too, and I'm in the Scholar's Program. Basically it isn't a necessity at all, but it does give its students what they call "priority consideration" to UCs. If you've taken a lot of classes already without any Scholar's credit I personally wouldn't worry about it, just make sure that you keep your GPA high and finish your pre-reqs.

Just remember it won't give you priority consideration to all UCs. Make sure you find out what schools are participating in the TAP program, but UCLA is the big one.

What UCs are you shooting for and what is your major? As a 3.6 you can very well be one of the borderline students that could really benefit from the scholars program.

thanks for the info guys.

I am a psychology major and I really want to get into ucla because its close by, but I'm also interested in uci and ucr. I'm not worried about those... my friend with a 2.9 got into ucr. I didn't, however, consider a 3.6 to be borderline since everyone I know in PCC has a lower gpa (well mostly). Anyway, I'm pretty sure I can get it up to a 3.7 (is that borderline as well?), but is there anything else that would help?

thanks

I do not mean to worry you but a 3.6 in psychology for UCLA is a little below average and to top it off psychology is one of the most impacted majors at UCLA making it even more difficult for you. This is not to say that even if you had a 3.4 you would not get in but also even if you have a 3.8 definitely does not mean you are automatically accepted so yes a 3.7 is still borderline. As you are right now it might be a 50/50 shot for you to get into UCLA if you have your IGETC and all of your major prerequisites done. I would say that TAP would very, very much help you to get into UCLA. I would suggest if it was still possible, that you complete TAP and most importantly complete IGETC and all of your major prerequisites, do not even let on not be completed because it will hurt your chances quite a bit for a impacted major such as psychology at UCLA. You definitely have chance as you are right now but I would say if at all possible complete the TAP as you are very borderline. Best of luck.

First and foremost, you NEED to complete your major pre-reqs to even be considered for UCLA. Make sure that's done before you try for any Scholar's classes. In my opinion, if TAP interferes with you completing your pre-reqs then try to shoot for a high GPA instead (which is why I posted earlier that if you already took a lot of classes at PCC and don't have room for the TAP requirements then don't worry about it).

Of course, TAP definitely helps your chances of getting in, but like Thedude44 said, it's more important to complete your transfer program and major pre-reqs first.
